Doubles Sweep Propels Men’s Tennis to Victory over Johnson University

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Men's Tennis team (3-8) used a strong doubles start to push itself to its third team victory of the 2018-19 season as it defeated Johnson University (3-7) by a final score of 7-2 at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon. 

BC swept doubles action in controlling fashion before taking four out of six singles matches to earn the victory. 

Brevard Men's Tennis currently holds a winning record within the confines of the McCoy Tennis Complex, as it has won three of its five home matches this season. 

Tom Mittring, who was named USA South Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season, cruised in doubles with his partner Tim Hengst before clinching the match for the Tornados with a 6-0, 6-2 no. 1 singles victory. With the win, Mittring extends his singles win streak to 19 matches, with all victories coming in the no. 1 spot for BC. 

Hengst also won his singles match, 6-0, 6-1, over Johnson's Michael Rhodenbaugh in no. 2 singles. The Menden, Germany native has won his last seven singles matches, while he and Mittring hold a 7-2 record as a no. 1 doubles pairing this season. 

Tyler Frazee, the two-time reigning USA South Freshman of the Week, continued his dominant form with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in no. 3 singles coupled with an 8-2 win with partner Nathan Boepple in no. 2 doubles action. Frazee has won seven-straight singles matches in both the no. 2 and no. 3 spots for BC. 

Alex Glaze picked up his third singles win of the season with a thrilling come-from-behind, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 decision in no. 6 singles over Johnson's Caleb Weaver. 

The Brevard Men's Tennis team returns to action this weekend for back-to-back USA South Conference home matches at the McCoy Tennis Complex. Brevard takes on Huntingdon College on Saturday, March 30 at 11:30 a.m. before hosting a rematch with Berea College on Sunday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
