Men’s Tennis Drops Close Conference Opener, 5-4

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Brevard College Tornados Men's Tennis team (0-3) narrowly fell in its conference opener to the Piedmont College Lions (1-0) on Monday afternoon at the Burgen Tennis Courts. 

Senior Tom Mittring extended his singles match streak to 13 matches with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory. Mittring, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, carries a singles winning streak that spans two seasons. 

Fellow senior Tim Hengst came-from-behind to defeat Harrison LaBollita, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, earning his second singles victory of 2019.

Freshman Tyler Frazee secures his first-career singles victory, pulling off a comeback against Houston Medlock, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. 

Brevard and Piedmont each won three singles matches, leaving action tied at 3-3 heading into doubles completion. 

In the No. 1 doubles slot, the pairing of Mittring and Hengst picked up an 8-5 victory. Piedmont claimed a win in the No. 3 doubles match, leaving the match to be decided by the No. 2 doubles battle. 

Frazee was paired with David Bumgarner who squared off with Piedmont's LaBollita and Andrew Chitty. The match was sent to a tiebreaker when both sides were stalemated at 7-7, which ended in favor of Piedmont, 7-5. The Tornados were just two points away from winning the match but fell in heartbreaking fashion. 

The Tornados will look to bounce back as they head to Misenheimer, N.C. on March 2 to square off with Pfeiffer University at 1 p.m.
