BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Men's Soccer team (2-4-2, 2-1-2 USAS) defeated Maryville College (7-3, 5-1 USAS) by the score of 5-0 on Wednesday night at Ives-Lemel Family Field. With the resounding win, the Tornados handed defending conference champion Maryville its first loss in USA South Conference play.
Making the victory even more remarkable, the shorthanded Tornados played the final 54 minutes of the match with ten players, outscoring the Scots 3-0 with a man down.
Matheus Masukawa recorded his third goal of the year and an assist, while Joao Monteiro registered his first two assists as a collegiate player to lead Brevard College offensively. Pedro Herrera, Eric Lenhart, Lucca Silvani and Adam Spencer all scored goals as well, while Marquis Dickerson added an assist.
Goalkeeper Patrick Hall earned the win in the net for the Tornados, recording eight saves en route to the blank sheet over 90 minutes. Hall made several dramatic saves down the stretch to preserve the shutout.
With the match evenly played for much of the first half, Masukawa opened the scoring with a goal in the 32nd minute. Monteiro placed a corner kick in ideal position in the goal mouth to Masukawa who played the ball off his right foot and past Maryville's goalkeeper to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, Brevard extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Herrera. Dickerson set the play up with a long throw-in that was flicked off the head of Masukawa toward the goal. Herrera then struck an offensive header into the back of the net for BC's second goal of the night.
Immediately following the goal, Brevard's Alex Tenjhay was issued a red card putting the Tornados a man down for the remainder of the match.
For the final nine minutes of the half, Brevard withstood several attacks by the Scots who were playing with the extra-man advantage. In turn, the Tornados were able to head into the intermission with a 2-0 lead, having outshot the Scots eight to five in the opening stanza.
A man down in the second half, the Tornados added three more goals beginning with Lenhart who scored on a sensational header off a perfectly placed free kick by Monteiro. The goal, which came in the 52nd minute, gave Brevard some insurance with a 3-0 lead and the senior defender Lenhart his first career collegiate goal.
Silvani then made the score 4-0 with his first career collegiate goal in the 72nd minute which was followed by Spencer's goal in the 81st minute to ice the victory. A raucous crowd at Ives-Lemel Family Field counted down the final minutes as the Tornados earned the 5-0 victory over the defending conference champions.
Hall and the Tornados as a team defended vigorously throughout the second half as the man-up Scots fired 15 shots in the final 45 minutes. In total, Maryville out-shot Brevard 20-14 for the contest.
The 5-0 win marked the largest margin of victory for the Tornados since a 6-0 win over Berea on September 30, 2017. Brevard won for the second straight time in USA South Conference play having defeated LaGrange in a come-from-behind, overtime road win last Saturday. BC now has scored seven unanswered goals and shut out its opponents over the last 147 minutes dating back to the LaGrange match.
Brevard will look to win its third consecutive conference match when the Tornados return to action on Tuesday, October 8 at 6 p.m. vs. USA South foe Pfeiffer University at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
