BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Men's Soccer team closed out its USA South Conference slate with a 3-2 victory over LaGrange on a rain-soaked Ives-Lemel Field late Friday afternoon. The win marked Brevard's second-straight victory and its fifth win of 2018.
The Tornados got on the board first in the 15th minute of action. After a foul set Brock Tuttle up with a free kick on the left side of the box, Tuttle proceded to place the ball into the box. The ball then ricocheted off of LaGrange's Qua Tucker, and into the net, giving Brevard a 1-0 advantage.
Just eight minutes later, Brevard would strike again. Xavi Mariduena took the ball into the box on the attack and was promptly fouled by LaGrange goalkeeper Cory Aycock. Aycock received a yellow card for this foul, and Brevard sent Matheus Masukawa in for the penalty kick. Masukawa converted the PK, extending the BC lead to 2-0.
Seven minutes later, Brevard would score once more. On a direct free kick, Tuttle sent the ball soaring into the box. From there, Alex Tenjhay played the ball off of his head and right to a leaping Jackson Riddle. Riddle sent a header into the left-upper 90 to give the Tornados a 3-0 lead.
The LaGrange Panthers did not go without a fight. After the intermission, the Panthers outshot Brevard 14-9, constantly keeping the pressure on Brevard.
In the 68th minute, Adam Curry placed a Noah Stanford pass past BC goalkeeper Patrick Hall to cut into the Brevard lead, 3-1.
Brevard's defense kept the Panthers at bay until Jude McEvoy rebounded his own shot and fired the ball past Hall to shrink the BC advantage to 3-2 in the 86th minute.
However, the Tornados held their own and were able to wind down the remaining four minutes of the contest, giving the Tornados their fifth win of 2018.
Both teams received their fair share of warnings from the officiating crew on Friday. The Panthers were called for four yellow cards, while the Tornados received two on the afternoon.
RECORD WATCH: Patrick Hall (5-12) saved a total of nine shots in the contest. Hall has now tallied 126 saves in 2018, which places him second on the BC NCAA-era record books for saves in a single season. Hall only trails Jerry Hatsady (2008), who recorded 136 saves back in the 2008 season for BC Men's Soccer.
The Tornados will wrap up the 2018 season on Saturday, Oct. 26. Three Brevard College Seniors (Bry'Kendrick Moore, Brock Tuttle, & Chris Efenecy) will be honored prior to Saturday's match as part of the Senior Day festivities. The match is set to start at 12 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Field.
