Piedmont Pulls Away Late to Down Brevard

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Brevard College Tornados Men's Lacrosse team (5-6, 2-3 USAS) fell in USA South Conference action to the Piedmont College Lions (5-7, 2-2 USAS) by a final score of 13-9 on Friday evening in Demorest, Georgia.

Piedmont outscored Brevard 4-1 in the second quarter to build its lead up before resisting a late Tornado rally to claim the victory.

Senior Jackson McKaig led all scorers in the match with four goals. McKaig also dished out two assists for six points.

Senior Sean Pratt added two third-quarter goals to Brevard's efforts, while Sam Duffie, Hewit Farr, and Paxton Brown all contributed one goal each.

Robert Kokal led all Tornados with seven ground balls coupled with three caused turnovers to help BC's defense, while senior goalkeeper Peyton Mooney tallied 16 saves.

Piedmont used a well-balanced attack to propel itself to victory. Avery Jenks and Brady Jenks led the Lions with three goals each, while goalkeeper Lamont Nesbitt stopped 17 BC shots.

As a team, the Lions outshot the Tornados, 63-42. Piedmont won a total of 16 faceoffs to Brevard's 10, while the Lions committed six fewer turnovers than the Tornados.

Brevard converted 25 of its 36 clear attempts on the evening, while Piedmont was successful on 18 of its 27.

After the Tornados killed a penalty to open action up, Duffie got BC on the board with a goal at the 13:09 mark in the first quarter.

Piedmont answered with back-to-back goals to close out a low-scoring first quarter of action, as the Lions held a slim 2-1 lead.

Farr tied the contest with 10:44 left in the second quarter, driving home his 41st goal of the season.

Piedmont closed the first half out with four-straight goals, sparked by a man-up goal at the 4:28 mark, to take a 6-2 lead into the intermission.

The Lions started the third quarter right where they left off, as Piedmont's Avery Jenks and Jonathan Boan scored back-to-back goals within 15 seconds of each other to swell their lead up to an 8-2 margin.

Pratt scored two goals on both ends of a Piedmont score to cut the margin to 9-4.

Following Pratt's second goal, McKaig struck for back-to-back scores to dwindle Piedmont's lead down to 9-6.

Piedmont's Jacob Wittenburg opened the fourth quarter up with a goal just 32 seconds into the stanza to extend its lead back up to four goals at 10-6.

McKaig scored two-straight goals for the second time in the contest to slice the Lions' lead down to two goals at 10-8 with 12:18 left in the contest.

Piedmont was able to pull away with three unanswered goals to extend its margin out to 13-8. BC senior Brown scored off of a McKaig assist with 4:40 to play, however that score proved to be the contest's last as the Lions claimed the 13-9 conference victory.

BC Men's Lacrosse returns to action on Saturday, April 13 with a trip to Danville, Va. to face off with the Averett Cougars (1-9, 0-4 USAS) at 1 p.m. before returning to Ives-Lemel Field on Saturday, April 20 for its season-finale against Huntingdon College (8-6, 4-0 USAS). BC's Senior Day festivities will take place before the 2 p.m. ball drop on April 20.
