Program Record Win Streak Reaches Five For Tornados

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The trio of Kyle Hunziker, Sam Duffie and Hewitt Farr tallied three goals each as the Brevard men's lacrosse team posted a 12-8 victory over Greensboro and in the process extended the program record winning streak to five straight games.

Brevard (8-2) won its second road game of the slate by holding the opposition under double figures for the seventh time this season and fourth time in the winning streak. That was due in large part to Xzavier Holmes-Copeland converting 10 saves on the afternoon.

Hunziker drove home two goals inside the first four minutes of the game to give Brevard the early edge. Farr got into the act with a strike at the 9:28 mark, following a pass from Jack Shade, as the Tornados stormed out in front 3-0.

Greensboro (7-6) retaliated with a goal from Andrew Klementz, but Shade countered with a strike for Brevard to move the lead to 4-1 with just under four minutes remaining. Spencer Kontoulas notched the second Pride goal of the game with 2:48 left in the first period, but Duffie responded with an unassisted score to provide Brevard with a 5-2 advantage.

Klementz, on a pass from Victor Mehrtens, found the back of the net for the third Greensboro point as the two teams were separated by a 5-3 margin through the first period.

Duffie recorded his second goal of the contest at the 8:09 mark of the second to double the Brevard lead to 6-3. Hunziker followed with his third strike, on a pass from Duffie, as the Tornados grabbed a four-goal edge.

Brevard's lead reached five goals after Farr and Jackson McKaig teamed up for the third Tornado goal of the second, a man-up strike, resulting in an 8-3 lead. McKaig followed with an unassisted goal of his own with 1:14 left before the intermission as Brevard held The Pride scoreless in the second and took a 9-3 lead.

Greensboro regained its composure during the break and responded with a man-up goal by Kyle Dahlin, who scored on a pass from Michael Halladay at the 11:26 mark of the third. The Pride followed with a goal from Austin Bane, trimming the deficit to four, who converted a pass by Mehrtens.

Klementz found the back of the net for the third time in the game as Greensboro finished off the third quarter with three goals, trimming the lead to 9-6.

Halladay added his second assist of the day at the 7:03 mark of the fourth, hitting an open Mehrtens as Greensboro moved with two, 9-7. Farr quickly answered for the Tornados, driving home a pass from McKaig to make for a three-goal advantage.

Mehrtens again drew Greensboro within two, following a pass from Dahlin, but back-to-back goals by David Buono and Duffie resulted in the Tornados' four-goal triumph.

Brevard closes out its home schedule next Saturday (March 31) when the Tornados host Averett for Senior Day at 12 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Field.
