AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Brevard College Cycling team will compete at the 2019 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships this weekend in Augusta, Georgia. Five Brevard College student-athletes will make the trip to the national championship event, which begins with time trials on Friday and concludes with the criterium on Sunday.
Hannah Arensman, a USA Cycling Academic All-Star, will represent Brevard College on the women's side of the national championships. Arensman, who earlier this season won a cyclocross national championship as a member of Brevard's team relay, will race in Saturday's women's varsity road race and Sunday's criterium. It will mark the third national championship of the season for Arensman, who finished third individually at the cyclocross national championships and fourth in the individual omnium at the Mountain Bike nationals.
As a freshman at the 2017 Collegiate Road National Championships in Grand Junction, Colorado, Arensman finished second in the individual time trial behind Janelle Cole (Brevard College Class of 2018). She also placed 11th in the road race and ninth in the criterium in 2017. Last year, Arensman competed in the 2018 Collegiate Road National Championships also held in Grand Junction, where she finished fourth in the individual time trial, eighth in the road race, 13th in the criterium and 14th in the individual omnium.
On the men's side, Brevard College senior Scott McGill as well as freshmen Tyler Clark, Tim Coffey, and Dalton Collins, will make the trip to Augusta. All four male riders will race in the road race and the criterium, with Collins also racing in the individual time trials.
McGill will embark on his final collegiate event after graduating from Brevard College this past weekend with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. The road nationals will mark the third national championship this season for McGill who finished fourth in the men's individual omnium at the mountain bike nationals and 19th at the cyclocross nationals. McGill then raced for the Tornados in the road season, highlighted by a win in the Men's Collegiate A Criterium at the Tiger Town Omnium in Anderson, South Carolina.
Clark will look to conclude his freshman campaign in all three cycling disciplines with the Tornados which began with a trip to the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Switzerland and included a national championship in the Cyclocross team relay. A USA Cycling Academic All-Star, Clark will be racing in his third national championship this weekend to go along with trips to the mountain bike and cyclocross nationals. Clark finished in 13th place in both cross country and short track at the mountain bike national championships and placed fifth individually at the cyclocross nationals.
Coffey heads into his first USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships after a successful debut to his collegiate career which included a win in the Men's Category 3 race at the Hincapie Spring Series in Greenville, South Carolina. Coffey also raced this season at the USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclocross National Championships where he finished 21st.
Collins, a USA Cycling Academic All-Star selection, will be racing in his second collegiate national championship after making his nationals debut with a 39th place finish at the cyclocross nationals in December. Collins then raced on the road for the Tornados, highlighted by a strong showing at the Hincapie Spring Series Races and a 14th place finish at the Tiger Town Omnium Men's Collegiate A Road Race.
The 2019 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships begin Friday with the team and individual time trials starting and finishing at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. On Saturday, the Collegiate Female Varsity road race begins at 9:15 a.m. Starting and finishing at Fort Gordon, the four-lap race spans 60 miles (96.6 kilometers). The five-lap, 75-mile (120.7 kilometers) Collegiate Male Varsity road race starts at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Sunday's action moves to downtown Augusta for the Criterium. The 70-minute Female Varsity Criterium starts at 10:30 a.m., while the 80-minute Male Varsity Criterium begins at 1:50 p.m.
