Kiprono Leads Way for Tornados at Furman Invitational

Hassan Kiprono posted a time of 26:40.70 to lead the way for the Brevard cross country team in the men's 8k race on Saturday morning in the Furman Invitational held on the Furman Golf Course.

Kiprono, who finished 49th in the event, was the top finisher on the men's unit that included 175 participants.

The Tornados, who had six runners competing in the event, also received a solid outing from Jose Bravini who crossed the line in a time of 32:20.50 (168th). He was followed shortly by Orrlando Johnson (34:39.00; 172nd), Jack Dills (35:17.40; 173rd), Leejhai Wells (40:13.60; 174th) and Dal Davis (42:37.30; 175th).

Furman earned the men's team title in a collective time of 2:00:16.70 as seven runners finished among the top 10. Mount Olive (2:04:40.00) followed with a second place showing, while Clemson was third at a time of 2:07:33.10. Brevard finished the team event 14th in a total time of 2:49:14.20.

Clemson's James Quattlebaum was the top individual finisher for the men's event, posting a time of 23:50.40. He was followed by Adam Craig (Mount Olive), who crossed the line at 23:57.60, beating out a slew of Furman runners that included Tanner Binkle, Aaron Templeton, Mason Coppi, Josh Brickell and Ryan Adams.

The Tornados' women's team, which competed in the 6k event, was led by Kaitlin Chaump, who finished in a time of 28:40.85 (133rd). She was followed in the race by Mackenzie Lautenschlager, whose time of 30:13.95 placed her 145th, while the tandem of Molly Brown (31:37.58) and Mary Gray Davis (33:59.89) rounded out the Brevard lineup.

The host Paladins won the overall team title in a time of 1:44:32.45, placing all seven runners in the top 10, as they averaged a pace of 20:54.49. They were followed by Clemson (1:51:50.03) and Lee (1:52:16.51).

Furman's Allie Buchalski was the top individual finisher in a time of 20:30.42, followed closely by teammate Gabrielle Jennings (20:42.39). Leah Hanle (Mount Olive) crossed the line in third (20:49.97), beating out three Paladin runners that brought home fourth, fifth and sixth.

The Tornados cross country team returns to action on Sept. 30, when the team treks to Maryville, Tenn. to compete in the Maryville Invitational.
