Tornados Win Five-Set Thriller Over LaGrange, Split Pair at Tri-Match
MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Brevard College volleyball team (7-17, 6-7 USAS) split two matches at a USA South Conference tri-match held Saturday in Maryville, Tennessee. In neutral site action, the Tornados defeated LaGrange in a five-set thriller (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-13) before dropping a match to host Maryville 3-0 (25-23, 25-7, 25-15) in straight sets.

In the first match of the day, Brevard and LaGrange went to five sets in a wild back-and-forth affair.  Freshman Ashley Hoxit led all players with 19 kills, while sophomore Kaitlyn Pressley delivered 13 kills and 13 assists.  The 19 kills matched a career-high for Hoxit, as the native of Balsam Grove, North Carolina hit the same mark in a win at Piedmont earlier this season.

Sophomore Makenna Parkins recorded 13 kills to match a season-high, while freshman Logan Priddy registered a match-high 29 assists to facilitate the BC attack.

Defensively, Bailey Lance led the Tornados with 19 digs as one of four BC players with double-digit dig totals.  Priddy (13), Pressley (11), and senior Morgan Graham joined Lance by hitting the double-figure digs mark as well for the contest.

With 13 kills, 13 assists, and 11 digs, Pressley notched the third triple-double of her collegiate career.  The sophomore from Brevard, North Carolina, also reached the rarity in the sport of volleyball with triple-doubles of kills, assists, and digs vs. Huntingdon earlier this season and in a win over Piedmont last Spring.

The Brevard squad also hit the double-digit service ace mark as a team for the seventh time this season and the sixth time in the last nine matches.  Lance led the Tornados with three service aces, while Graham and Priddy each foiled the Panthers with two aces apiece.  Hoxit, Pressley, and sophomore Abbey Duncan each served an ace as well.

Brevard took an early lead in the thrilling five-setter with a 25-22 win in set number one as freshman Melanie Hoyle and Hoxit finished off the set with kills.

LaGrange responded with a 25-22 win in set number two, while Pressley delivered a kill to take a 25-22 win in set three.  Trailing 2-1, the Panthers won set number four to force an ultimate fifth set.  Following back-to-back kills by Hoxit, BC led 14-8 with match point in hand.  LaGrange battled back with five consecutive points, however, the Tornados were able to finish off the match on a kill by Pressley to take the fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2.

In the second match of the day, host Maryville swept Brevard in straight sets.  The first set proved to be the most competitive with a block by Hoyle and Priddy, giving the Tornados a 22-21 lead who then took another lead at 23-22 after a service error by the Scots.  Maryville responded by reeling off three straight points to take the 25-23 set one victory.

Parkins and Hoxit each recorded seven kills, while Lance registered 11 digs to lead the Tornados in the defeat.

Brevard will return to action on Tuesday with a USA South Conference road match at Agnes Scott, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Decatur, Georgia.
