Tornados Compete at Tri-Match hosted by Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team competed in a tri-match hosted by Pfeiffer University on Saturday in Misenheimer, North Carolina.  Brevard (0-9) dropped both matches, falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-21) to host Pfeiffer (7-2) followed by a 3-0  (25-18, 25-9, 25-21) loss to Toccoa Falls (8-1). 

Breanna O'Shields led the Tornados with eight kills offensively to go along with eight digs on the defensive side to complement a team-best 18 digs by libero Mariana Rodriguez.  Setter Hannah Gordon delivered 15 assists to go along with nine digs.

The service game continued to be a weapon for the Tornados who had five different players – Rodriguez, Gordon, Morgan Graham, Julie McGahy and Sarah Hutchens deliver aces.      

In the first set of the match, Brevard scored three straight points on a kill by Raley Shirey, a McGahy ace and a kill by Gordon to take a 13-12 lead.  Pfeiffer responded with a seven straight points to take control of the opening set. 

Pfeiffer dominated the second set before Brevard fought valiantly in the third set.  To two teams played evenly for much of the set as the score was tied at 13-13.  The home team however pulled away again late in the set to clinch the match in straight sets.

The second match for the Tornados in the tri-match was a neutral-site affair vs. Toccoa Falls. Rodriguez led the Nados again defensively with 15 digs, while Shirey reached double-digits with 10 kills.  Gordon set up her hitters again with 24 assists.

The opening set was closely contested as the Tornados tied the set 23-23 on back-to-back points.  The Screaming Eagles then scored two straight points of their own to clinch the set. 

Brevard took a 4-2 lead to start the second set before Toccoa Falls reeled off a 9-0 run to take an 11-4 lead.  The Screaming Eagles maintained a comfortable lead throughout the set to take a 2-0 set advantage.

Toccoa Falls stormed ahead to a 15-5 lead in the final set en route to the match win.

In the remaining match of the event, host Pfeiffer defeated Toccoa Falls 3-2.

Brevard returns to action with a road match at Guilford on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
