Tornados Notch First Victory of 2018 in Straight Set Fashion

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Volleyball team earned its first win of 2018 with a resounding three-set sweep over Berea as part of a USA South Conference tri-match held Saturday at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  In the earlier match of the day for the Tornados, Brevard dropped a four-setter to Huntingdon.

Brevard (1-18, 1-9) defeated Berea (2-16, 1-8) 25-21, 25-13 and 25-20 as the Tornados did not relinquish a single set in the decisive victory.
 
Hannah Jenkins recorded 16 kills to lead the Tornados offensively in the win.  Jordan Lloyd registered 10 kills to go along with 14 digs on the defensive end.  Hannah Gordon once again set up her teammates with a game-high 35 assists as well as eight digs.  Mariana Rodriguez added nine digs, while Sydney Fox contributed with seven kills.
 
Brevard was very effective with the service ace in the win over Berea as the Tornados posted a phenomenal nine aces in the three sets.  Lloyd led the way with three service aces, while Morgan Graham, Madison Hogan and Jenkins each registered two aces. 
 
After winning the first set 25-22, the Tornados were dominant in set number two. BC notched its highest point differential in a single set this season with a 25-13 score in the second set.
 
With a 2-0 lead in sets, the Tornados led the third set 22-20, just three points away from their first victory of 2018.  Gordon then found Jenkins for back-to-back winning attacks to set up match point at 24-20.  On match point, Gordon once again provided an ideal set for an assist to Brook Groves who delivered the match-winning kill for the victorious Tornados.
 
In the earlier match, Huntingdon topped Brevard 25-22, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-18.  Fox recorded 19 kills and 13 digs, while Lloyd tallied 23 digs to go along with 11 kills.  Gordon once again provided a multitude of opportunities at the setter position with 45 assists.  Rodriguez added 17 digs in the effort.
 
The Tornados return to action with another USA South tri-match on Sunday, October 21 in LaGrange, Georgia.  Brevard will face off against host LaGrange at 10 a.m. followed by a noon tilt vs. Maryville.
