Tornados Drop USA South Opener to Piedmont

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College Volleyball team (0-10, 0-1) dropped its USA South Conference opener to Piedmont College (4-4, 1-0) 3-0 on Wednesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.  The Lions defeated the Tornados 25-23 in a tight first set, before taking the second set 25-20 and the third set 25-14.

The opening set was a battle between the two USA South teams as Brevard ran out to a 7-4 lead to open the contest.  Piedmont battled back to tie the match at 7-7, the first of ten tied scores in the set.  Late in the set, the Tornados built a 21-23, however, the Lions rallied with four straight points to end the stanza and take the opening set.

The second set opened with an ace by BC's Mariana Rodriguez as the Tornados began with a 4-0 lead.  The Lions responded however with an 8-1 lead to take an 8-5 lead.  Kills by Brevard's Jenna Wendel and Sydney Fox helped the Tornados tie the set at 11-11.  The Lions though then went on another scoring run and in turn, never trailed again taking that momentum into the third and final set.

Fox led the Brevard attack with nine kills, while also leading the team with 18 digs.  Hannah Gordon tallied 17 assists, setting up her teammates throughout.  Rodriguez totaled 17 digs and two service aces, while Hannah Jenkins added five kills.

The Tornados return to action on Saturday with a trip to Berea, Ky. for conference matches against Huntingdon and host Berea.
