Brevard drops first two matches in the Rhodes College Tournament

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tornados Women's volleyball team opened up their 2018 campaign Friday as they traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to take part in the Rhodes College Tournament. Anna Grant's squad made the trek to Memphis sporting a very young squad which features seven freshman and six sophomores, only four of which are returners to the program.

Brevard opened up Friday's action against the hosts, facing off with the Rhodes College Lynx. The Lynx swept away the Tornados in three sets; 25-16, 25-12, 25-13. Jordan Lloyd and Mariana Rodriguez tied for the team high 12 digs, while Sydney Fox added 8 digs. On the offensive, Fox led the way with 31 total attempts, driving home 5 kills in the process. Lloyd helped the cause as she tallied a team-high 6 kills on 15 total attempts, earning a 0.333 percentage.

Sydney Fox was one of five Brevard newcomers to see action, as Brook Groves, Hannah Gordon, Mariana Rodriguez and Morgan Graham all saw their first action in their collegiate tenure at Brevard.

The second bout pitted the Tornados against the Sewanee Tigers of Sewanee, Tennessee. This match also saw a 3-0 sweep against Brevard; 25-10, 25-12, 25-15. Lloyd and Fox earned 19 and 17 total attempts respectively, while Lloyd drove a day-high 7 kills for the Tornado's squad. Brevard battled throughout the final set, keeping it as close as 13-13 before the Tigers were able to pull away.

The Tornados will play back to back matches Saturday morning, squaring off with Dubuque at 11:00 am est., followed by Birmingham-Southern at 1:00 pm est.
