BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard volleyball team heads to Berea, Ky., on Saturday to square off with Huntingdon and Berea.
The Tornados (9-4) will open play at 2 p.m. against Huntingdon, completing a previous match with the Hawks that was halted on Sept. 23 in Montgomery, Ala., after a power outage. The Hawks were lead 25-15, 25-12 and 9-8 in the middle of the third set.
Upon completion of that match the two teams will take the court at to square off in a regularly scheduled contest.
Brevard wraps up the afternoon by facing the host Mountaineers. It marks the second match between the two programs this season with the Tornados winning the previous contest on Sept. 23 by scores of 25-13. 25-22, 25-9.
With three victories this weekend it would mark the 12th time since the 2000 season, and second time under head coach Anna Grant, that the Tornados won at least 10 games in a season. It would also tie for the most wins (12) in a season by Brevard in the three-year tenure under Grant.
The Tornados have capitalized on the offensive play of seniors Hannah Elmore (135 kills), Stephanie Lambert (123) and Rachel Ruble (105) to average 11.48 kills/set. Classmate Josie McElroy has also proven instrumental in the Brevard's success this season as she leads the unit with 438 assists.
Among the key contributors on defense for Brevard include Maggie Weiss (253 digs), Whitney DeMoss (22 total blocks, nine solo blocks) and Ruble (20 total blocks, 16 assisted blocks). That combination leads the way for a Tornado defense that has limited the opposition to a .130 attack percentage and 10.37 kills/set.
Huntingdon (12-13) enters the weekend having dropped its last two outings to Maryville and Piedmont. The Hawks have six players with at least 100 kills, including Bria Rochelle who has posted a team-high 194 (2.31 kills/set). Rochelle is a solid two-way player as she leads Huntingdon in digs (220), while Addison Genard anchors the front row with 71 total blocks (56 assisted blocks).
Berea (3-14) is in the midst of a four-match losing streak, which began on Sept. 30 in a five-set setback to Piedmont. Katherine Gonterman leads the way on offense with 111 kills (1.98 kills/set), while teammates Destiney Balser (188) and Isis Hill (36) top the unit in digs and total blocks, respectively.
