BREVARD, N.C. – The offensive performance of Hannah Elmore (11 kills) combined with the defensive prowess of Maggie Weiss (19 digs) and Hannah Jenkins (three assisted blocks) helped Brevard complete a three-game sweep of Agnes Scott by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-19 in Wednesday evening volleyball action at Boshamer Gym.
Elmore, who led the way for a Tornado (8-3) unit that finished with 38 kills, was joined among the offensive leaders by Stephanie Lambert (eight kills) and Whitney DeMoss (seven). Josie McElroy was also instrumental with 31 assists.
Weiss and Jenkins anchored Brevard's back row defense, which posted 62 digs, while Jenkins and Elmore, who added two solo blocks, keyed a Tornado front row that tallied four solo blocks and six assisted blocks.
The two units traded points throughout the early stages of the third set, enduring for eight ties, as they reached a 12-all deadlock following a kill from McElroy. McElroy took over in serve and used a service ace along with an Elmore block to give the Tornados a slim two-point advantage.
A series of kills by Alexis Smith allowed Agnes Scott to pull even at 16. However an unforced error by the Scotties, which was quickly followed by two Weiss service aces strikes by Lambert and Vargas resulted in a 24-17 lead by the Tornados. The Scotties took advantage of two Brevard errors, but it was not enough as a kill by DeMoss completed the fifth sweep of the season for the Tornados.
The Scotties streaked out to a 5-1 lead in the second frame before Brevard regained its offensive rhythm and knotted the match at five-all on a slam by Elmore. Using momentum from the rally, the Tornados added strikes from the combination of DeMoss, Jenkins and Bri Vargas to move in front 14-10 and force an Agnes Scott timeout.
Five unforced Brevard errors in the next six points allowed the Scotties to pull even at 15, as the two teams endured six ties among the next 16 point to reach a 23-all deadlock following a kill by DeMoss. Weiss came through in the clutch with a key service ace and following an attack error by Agnes Scott's Tiara White the Tornados completed the two-point victory.
Agnes Scott established a 7-3 advantage early in the first set before a series of kills by Elmore allowed the Tornados to pull even at 10. Brevard completed its comeback, behind the service game of Weiss, who recorded a service ace and a Lambert kill, taking a 14-12 lead.
The Tornados used an Agnes Scott timeout to their advantage by driving home eight kills in the next 14 points, including two each by DeMoss and Elmore, as they stretched their lead to 22-18 in the process. The Scotties burned their second timeout, but it was to no avail as Brevard capitalized on two attack errors and a Lambert kill to complete the six-point win.
Brevard returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Tornados host Wesleyan (Ga.) and Covenant in a tri-match that begins at noon in Boshamer Gym.
