BREVARD, N.C. – After a 10-day layoff since its last match the Brevard College volleyball team returns to action on Wednesday when meets Salem College at 7 p.m.
The clash with the Spirits in Winston-Salem is the first of three matches for the Tornados (2-1) this week, which also includes a trip to Emory & Henry to play both Washington & Lee and the host Wasps' on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Rachel Ruble leads the way for Brevard offensively, accounting for a team-high 24 kills in 61 total attacks. Ruble, averaging 2.67 kills per set, has two more kills than teammate Stephanie Lambert and a four-kill advantage over Hannah Elmore.
Lambert is one of three players instrumental in the Tornados' defensive success, leading the team with nine blocks (eight assisted). Joining her among the front row leaders is Whitney Demoss, who has assisted on five blocks, which gives Brevard a 16-10 edge in assisted blocks over its opposition.
While the tandem of Lambert and Demoss have controlled the net, senior defensive specialist Maggie Weiss has anchored the back row to the tune of 35 digs (3.89 digs/set). Weiss' best performance through the first three matches came in a sweep of Pfeiffer (Sept. 3), where she tallied 15 digs. She has also keyed Brevard's service game with 16 service aces (1.78 service aces/set) as the Tornados have 38 as a unit.
Brevard will be looking to extend its winning streak to three matches after posting back-to-back sweeps over Virginia Union (25-18, 25-21, 27-25) and Pfeiffer (25-14, 25-20, 25-12) on Sunday, September 3.
The trio of Ruble, Lambert and DeMoss led the way for a well-balanced Brevard squad that finished with 35 kills and a .325 attack percentage in the victory over Pfeiffer. Individually, Lambert and DeMoss had better than a .350 attack percentage, posting a .368 and .467, respectively. Brevard also got a solid performance from Josie McElroy (25 assists), Weiss (15 digs) and Lambert (four assisted blocks), as it earned the Pfeiffer Tournament crown.
Earlier that day, the Tornados received 10 kills each Ruble and Elmore and a solid defensive effort from both Kathryn Beasley (10 digs) and Maggie Weiss (nine) to complete the three-game sweep of Virginia Union.
Along with the Ruble and Elmore the Tornados, who tallied 36 kills in the morning session, also received a major offensive contribution from Stephanie Lambert, who drove home nine kills in 26 attempts. McElroy handed out a match-high 29 assists to go along with three service aces and two digs.
