BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's and women's tennis teams opened their 2019-20 home schedules on a hot and humid Tuesday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex.  The Tornado women's team fell 8-1 to the visiting Lions, while Piedmont defeated Brevard 9-0 in the regular-season opener for the BC men's team.

Senior Samantha Sepe, an All-USA South Conference performer in 2018-19, provided the Tornados with the home team's lone victory.  In a competitive battle played in sweltering conditions, Sepe topped Piedmont's Caroline Connelly 6-1, 6-4 in number one singles.

Sepe and her doubles partner Alli Kogoy provided a hard-fought affair in number one doubles vs. Piedmont's Connelly and Megan Waldheim. Ultimately, the number one doubles team of the Lions won 8-6 in the most competitive doubles match of the event.

Piedmont won every other match on the afternoon on both the men's and women's side.

The event marked the Tornado debut for several men's players as freshmen Christian Rogerson (no. 1 singles/no. 1 doubles), Ethan McGee (no. 2 singles/no. 1 doubles), Troy Broska (no. 3 singles/no. 2 doubles), Jackson Ray (no. 4 singles/no. 2 doubles) and Jamarcus Walker (no. 6 singles/no. 3 doubles) all made their first collegiate appearance.

Sophomore Andrew Ingram, the only BC returner in the season-opening lineup, played no. 5 singles and no. 3 doubles with Walker.

Meanwhile, the women's team returned home following a successful season-opening Battle of the Blue Ridge in Sweet Briar, Virginia. At the multi-draw event hosted by Sweet Briar College, freshmen Iocovozzi and Kogoy each won singles championships.

The Brevard College men's and women's tennis teams return to action on Saturday, September 21 at Virginia-Wise. The dual match is set for a 12 p.m. in Wise, Virginia.
