Brevard College Women’s Tennis student-athletes Margaret Correll, Lily Farr, Eleanor Flannery, Brooke Garland, and Sarah Iocovozzi – alongside BC alumna Carmen Boone – were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), garnering Division III Women’s Scholar-Athlete status. The six selections for the Tornados helped BC claim the All-Academic Team award.
The USA South Conference announced its annual USA South Academic All-Conference list, selecting a school-record 112 Brevard College student-athletes as Academic All-Conference selections, part of a conference-record 1,702 overall selections.
Brevard’s 112 selections onto the Academic All-Conference team gives the Tornados 21 more selections than the 2018-19 season, as BC ranks tied for sixth out of the 18 USA South institutions in overall selections. A total of 32 student-athletes earned “With Distinction” honors, a significant growth of 15 selections from last academic year.
The BC men’s soccer program claimed the most selections onto the Academic All-Conference team with 16, as every single team at Brevard was recognized by the USA South.
In order to be selected to the USA South Academic All-Conference team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.30 GPA in each of the two semesters in the academic year to be eligible. Any student-athlete participating at any Conference institution is eligible thus the participant does not have to compete in a Conference-sponsored sport. Additionally, any student-athlete earning a 3.90 GPA or above earned the All-Academic honor "With Distinction".
Senior Samantha Sepe, a member of the Brevard College Women’s Tennis team for two years, is the next honoree in BC Athletics' Spring Senior Profile series, highlighting and honoring 2020 seniors in Spring sports who had their respective seasons cut short due to the impact of COVID-19.
Sepe, a native of Niceville, Florida, graduated from Brevard with a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Science. Her post-graduation plans include pursuing a coaching career in tennis before later entering the medical world.

Boone, a native of Hudson, North Carolina, will graduate from Brevard College with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. Following graduation, Boone’s future plans include working for a publishing company, such as a magazine or newspaper, and do editing and/or journalism. Boone also plans to be a published poet in the future.

After careful consideration in the wake of nationwide cancellations and postponements in the intercollegiate and professional sports landscape as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, and in the best interest of the health and well-being of student-athletes, family, staff, and fans, the USA South Athletic Conference has announced the conclusion of the 2020 Spring regular season. This also extends to all USA South Conference championships and the 2020 USA South Spring Sports Festival, originally scheduled for April 23-26 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
As a result of this news, and in alignment with the USA South and the NCAA, the Brevard College Department of Athletics will be suspending all athletic-related activity - including competitions, practices, and travel – for the remainder of the 2020 Spring semester. This extends out to current Spring sports in their traditional season of competition as well as Fall sports entering into their non-traditional practice seasons. The cancellation of all athletically-related activities includes Brevard College's non-NCAA sports of Cycling, Climbing, and Competitive Cheer & Dance, while also extending to the use of on-campus athletic facilities such as the weight room and gymnasiums, among other areas.
The Brevard College women’s tennis team (6-4) closed out its Spring Break trip on Thursday with two victories, a 5-4 win over The University of St. Francis and claiming a 7-2 triumph over Marywood University at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
The victories conclude a 3-1 stretch for the Tornados in their four matches played at the Spring Break Sports Tournament. BC’s men’s and women’s teams played contests at the USTA National Training Center and the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
Sepe and Farr continued their dominance in number-one singles play against St. Francis, earning an 8-3 victory over St. Francis' number-one pairing. Freshman Hamrick Perry and Alli Kogoy cruised to an 8-1 doubles win to give the Tornados a 2-1 match lead heading into doubles action.
Due to action at both Colorado College and Berea College in response to COVID-19, Brevard men's and women's tennis will not face Colorado College as originally scheduled on Friday in Orlando. Furthermore, the Tornados' originally scheduled home matches against Berea on Sunday have also been canceled.

The Brevard College women’s tennis team (4-4) got right back in the win column early Tuesday morning, cruising past a short-handed Curry College (0-18) squad, 9-0 at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
The match was part of BC’s stay in the Spring Break Sports Tournament, hosted at multiple facilities including the USTA Center.
Brevard claimed match wins in number-one doubles and earned victories in the top-three slots in singles competition. The Tornados won no. 2-3 doubles and no. 4-6 singles by default, clinching the 9-0 overall match victory.

The Brevard College men’s and women’s tennis teams have announced that their respective conference-opening contests, originally slated for this Saturday in Berea, Kentucky, have been rescheduled for Sunday, March 15 and the location has been changed to the McCoy Tennis Complex in Brevard.
The contests will follow BC’s spring break trip to Orlando, Florida, where both teams will compete in a tournament next week.
The Tornado women’s team opens play on Monday, March 9 against Transylvania University at 6:30 p.m., while the men’s side plays its first match on Tuesday, March 10 against Curry College at 6:30 p.m. in a doubleheader alongside the women’s squad.

The Brevard College women’s tennis team has been selected to finish in third place in the USA South Conference West Division as the conference released its annual Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
Defending West Division champion Piedmont College was voted as the preseason favorite, as the Lions received eight first-place votes and 64 total points in the poll. Huntingdon College finished just ahead of the Tornados, as the Hawks garnered 53 points to BC’s 48.
Covenant College received the lone remaining first-place vote, but finished behind Brevard in the fourth spot with 43 total points. Maryville College finished slightly ahead of LaGrange College, 36 points to 35 points, while Wesleyan College (seventh place, 17 points), Agnes Scott College (eighth place, 15 points), and Berea College (ninth place, 13 points) round out the west side of the conference.
One year removed from its most successful season since 2011-12, the Brevard College women’s tennis team - under the direction of first-year Head Coach Brad Jones - has released its full Spring schedule for the 2019-20 season.
The Tornados enter the 2020 Spring campaign after a monumental 2018-19 season that saw Brevard finish with a 12-6 record, its first winning record since 2011-12 while stringing together a 10-match win streak that tied the program’s longest in the NCAA-era.
“I can't wait to pick up where our women’s team left off from last Spring,” said Coach Jones on the upcoming season. “We are replacing two starting seniors with five strong new additions to an already deep roster. I’m really looking forward to seeing what this year’s women's team can accomplish together. They had a great individual and team fall season, so I’m hoping that success will carry over into the Spring.”

The Brevard College men's and women’s tennis teams opened their 2019-20 home schedules on a hot and humid Tuesday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex. The Tornado women's team fell 8-1 to the visiting Lions, while Piedmont defeated Brevard 9-0 in the regular-season opener for the BC men’s team.
Senior Samantha Sepe, an All-USA South Conference performer in 2018-19, provided the Tornados with the home team’s lone victory. In a competitive battle played in sweltering conditions, Sepe topped Piedmont’s Caroline Connelly 6-1, 6-4 in number one singles.

The Brevard College Women’s Tennis team will take part in the inaugural “Battle of the Blue Ridge” Women’s Tennis Tournament in Sweet Briar, Virginia this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 7-8). Host Sweet Briar College has announced the official draws for the ITA-sanctioned event, pegging senior Tornado student-athlete Samantha Sepe as the number-one overall seed in the Singles Main bracket.
Each set of brackets are in a double-elimination format, where round one winners move on to the “winners” bracket, while round one losers move into the “consolation” bracket. In each bracket, an individual and doubles champion and consolation champion will be crowned.
There are five brackets in total – Singles Main, Singles Pink, Singles Green, Doubles Main, and Doubles Pink. Seeding was determined by each participant’s Universal Tennis Rating (UTR), where Sepe ranked tops out of all tournament entrants.
Newly-minted Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach Brad Jones has announced the Fall portion of the Tornados’ 2019-20 schedule.
The men’s team will play a total of four matches over the course of the September and October months. BC’s women’s team kicks off its Fall season by taking part in the Battle of the Blue Ridge, a two-day tournament on September 7-8 hosted by Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va. Opponents for the Battle of the Blue Ridge are still to be determined.
Following the women’s tournament at Sweet Briar College, the two teams join together for the rest of the Fall season.
