BREVARD, N.C. - Senior student-athlete Darden King claimed a no. 3 singles victory, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch a 5-4 match win for the Brevard College Tornados Women's Tennis team (6-4) against the Maryville Scots (1-5) at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tornados took two out of three doubles matches before splitting singles with the Scots to earn the 5-4 victory. The duos of Samantha Sepe / Kelsey Kushner and King / Jen Cox won doubles, while Sepe, King, and Margaret Correll proved victorious in singles.
Kicking off doubles action, Sepe and Kushner faced Maryville's no. 1 duo in Kayla Zimmerman and Anastasia Dunn, where the Tornado pairing won, 8-2. Sepe and Kushner are currently riding a four-match win streak, claiming doubles victories in each of the Tornados' four-straight wins.
Cox and King have earned a victory in their last three pairing in the no. 2 slot.
In singles action, the Tornados and Scots split, 3-3. Sepe won her fourth no. 1 singles match in a row, defeating Maryville's McKennah Francis in straight-set fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
Kushner narrowly fell in the no. 2 slot in a close match to Zimmerman, 4-6, 6-1, 5-10. The loss marked Kushner's first singles loss since February 2 at NCAA DII Southern Wesleyan.
King claimed no. 3 singles, clinching the match for the Tornados, 6-2, 6-2, over Maryville's Carter Dickinson.
Dunn dropped Cox in no. 4 singles, 4-6, 0-6, while Mekenzie Bowman fell in the no. 6 slot, 0-6, 2-6.
Margaret Correll picked up a key no. 5 singles victory over MC's Savannah Bain, 6-1, 6-2.
The BC Tornados Women's Tennis team returns to action this Saturday, March 23 at the McCoy Tennis Complex for a USA South Conference match against Wesleyan College (0-3, 0-2 USAS) beginning at 1 p.m.
