BREVARD, N.C. – The Converse women's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over host Brevard on Wednesday afternoon at the Brevard Tennis Center.
The lone victory for the Tornados came in singles action by Hannah Spear, who earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Charlotte Gayle.
Converse grabbed the first three points of the match by virtue of a doubles sweep. The first win, 8-1, came from the tandem of Steffi Kong and Kaitlin Knight over Jen Cox and Kelsey Kushner. Teammates Taylor Parrott and Alex Schlesener claimed an 8-1 victory against Margaret Correll and Mekenzie Bowman. The Valkyries followed with an 8-1 by Morgan Hildebrandt and Abby Roth in a clash with Spear and Carmen Boone.
Singles play opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win by Kong over Kushner in the battle of No. 1 seeds. Knight brought home the Converse team win with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Correll. The Valkyries tallied their sixth team point as Schlesener came through with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Bowman.
With the match in hand, Converse added a 6-1, 6-1 win by Hildebrandt over Boone before picking up their final point as part of a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Parrott over Cox.
The Tornados return to action on March 24 when they head to Covenant for an 11 a.m. match.
