BREVARD, N.C. – With inclement weather in the forecast for Western North Carolina, the Brevard men's and women's tennis match against visiting Piedmont, originally set for Wednesday, Feb. 28, has been moved to Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Brevard Tennis Center.
The Tornado women's tennis team is in search of its first win of the spring semester after a strong performance against Pfeiffer, who emerged with a 6-3 win on Friday, Feb. 16. Despite the team setback, Mekenzie Bowman notched the first win of her collegiate career and Carmen Boone posted her first win of the season in a clash with the Falcons.
Bowman, competing in the fourth match of her Tornado career, downed Madison Furr by scores of 6-2, 7-6 in a clash of the No. 4 seeded singles. Boone, who followed in the steps of her teammate, posted a 6-7, 6-2, 11-9 victory over the Falcons' Maddie Hatley. Boone's win came in dramatic fashion as she rallied from a 9-8 deficit in the tiebreaker to complete the victory.
The Tornados also grabbed a doubles victory from the tandem of Boone and Hannah Spear, who took care of the duo of Hatley and Furr by a score of 9-7. The doubles team of Kelsey Kushner/ Jen Cox surrendered two match points to Juliana Batah / Ally Delaney, who rallied to earn a 9-8 win. Bowman, who teamed with Margaret Correll in doubles play, suffered a setback to Pfeiffer's Anna Branson / Sydney Honeycutt by an 8-1 margin.
Brevard's men's unit is looking to build off a 9-0 victory that took place in Berea on Sunday. The doubles tandem of Tim Hengst and Tom Mittring got the Tornados off to a great start with an 8-1 win over Dakota Massucco and Mike Malpartida. That was quickly followed by a victory by the team of Will Christiansen and David Bumgarner, who downed Brandon Mitchell and James Weaver 8-1.
The third Brevard point came by virtue of the first doubles win for Florian Peyssonneaux and Jaume Reig, who triumphed over Sam Slater and Evan Day by an 8-2 margin.
Mittring added his second win of the day in singles action as he made quick work of fellow No. 1 seed Massucco by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Brevard cinched the match victory when Christiansen downed Mitchell by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Bumgarner continued to add points for Brevard, collecting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Slater in a clash of fifth seeds. That was followed by the first collegiate singles win by Reig, who downed James Weaver 6-3, 6-3. Peyssonneaux closed out the match with the first win of his singles career as he bested Day 6-3, 6-1.
