Spear, Mittring Collect Wins Over Southern Wesleyan

BREVARD, N.C. – Freshman Hannah Spear earned her first collegiate victories in both women's singles and women's doubles action on Saturday afternoon against Southern Wesleyan.

Spear began the afternoon by teaming with Carmen Boone in doubles action, where the pair defeated Houston Childress and Caitlynn Nixon by a 9-8 (3) margin. Spear followed that by downing Childress by scores of 6-2, 6-4, was the lone women's player to record a singles victory for the Tornados on the afternoon.

Boone battled hard with Nixon in singles action as well, but Nixon emerged with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the clash of the fifth seeds. Southern Wesleyan, who won the match 7-2, finished with five wins in singles play behind the play of Alexia Rodriguez, Jennifer Ball, Chyna Jones and Kristi Cooper. Rodriguez and Ball teamed up in doubles action to earn an 8-1 victory, while Jones and Cooper posted an 8-2 win.

Tom Mittring highlighted the Brevard men's team, brandishing a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory in singles action over Urs Widow. The Tornados also got solid performances from Will Christiansen, who lost 7-5, 6-3 to Sam Bakker, and Tim Hengst, who had a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Siggy Menzel.

The Warriors completed a sweep of doubles action with wins by the combination Widow/Menzel, Stan Grzeslo/Bakker and Daniel Bolivar/Joseph Olatuniji.

The Tornados now turn their attention to Belmont Abbey who they host on Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.
