Tornados Topped by Spirits 1-0 Under the Lights

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Women's Soccer team (0-3-2) fell 1-0 to Salem College (3-3) on Tuesday night at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The Tornados limited the Spirits to just one goal which came in the seventh minute on a finish by Salem's Ellie Montes.  From the juncture onward, Brevard shut out the Spirits over the final 83 minutes of the match.

Junior goalkeeper Rebeccah Rojas, a USA South Defensive Player of the Week recipient earlier this season, set a season-high and matched a career-high with nine saves.  Several of the Rojas' saves were dramatic, diving stops that kept the Tornados within one goal despite a total of 18 shots by Salem.

With the exception of an early flurry in the opening minutes which included a shot by freshman Brianna Link, the Tornados were unable to generate significant offensive opportunities in the first half.  More scoring opportunities emerged in the second half as the Tornados fired off five shots and were the beneficiary of several set piece opportunities.

Emma White registered two shots, including one shot on goal, while Abbie Petrosky and Ashley Royster also recorded shots-on-goal in the second half.  White also took several free kicks, however the Tornados were unable to successfully convert those chances into scores.

Down the stretch, the Spirits effectively held off the Tornados as goalkeeper Hannah Wagner earned the shutout en route to her first win in goal in 2019.

Tuesday's under-the-lights match was held in conjunction with a Western North Carolina area Brevard College alumni meetup hosted by the Brevard College Alumni Association.

Brevard returns to action on Saturday with a road trip to Raleigh, North Carolina to face off against William Peace.  Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Tornados' next home match will be on Tuesday, October 1 at 6 p.m. vs. Piedmont at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
