BREVARD, N.C. – Senior stars Ashley Hughes, Caroline David, and Megan Shina left their mark on the Brevard College record books for perhaps the final time in their illustrious Tornado careers as the BC Tornados Women's Soccer team (11-7) ended its regular season slate with a 5-0 decision over the Piedmont International Bruins (4-10).
Hughes tallied three goals for her third hat trick of 2018. Shina added two goals and an assist, and David dished out two assists on the afternoon. Freshman Chloe Proffitt also added an assist to the BC effort.
Much like its last game against Regent, BC came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. The Tornados outshot the Bruins by a dominant 25-7 margin, including an 18-3 shot-on-goal advantage.
Hughes got things going for the Tornados, as she placed a David through pass up and past the Bruin's goalkeeper in the seventh minute of action.
Just a mere one minute later, Hughes and David connected once again to give Brevard a 2-0 advantage in the eighth minute. Hughes played another through pass and beat two Bruin defenders and the goalkeeper for the score.
In the 17th minute, freshman Proffitt played a gorgeous ball into the right side of the box to Shina. Shina then fired a blazing strike from the lower right corner of the box into the left upper 90 to extend BC's lead to 3-0.
Head Coach Juan Mascaro utilized his bench early in the contest, inserting Samantha Foster, Sydney Capan, Alyssa Hetherington, and Hannah Weatherall into the field, and Rebeccah Rojas into the goal for the remainder of the first half. The Tornados held a 3-0 advantage going into the second period.
Brevard's seniors were not done making their impact on the match. Elise Youmans was inserted back into goal late in the contest, and Lane Berchtold held down the defensive back.
Hughes connected for her 19th goal of 2018 in the 48th minute, as she played a ball from Shina and scored, giving her a hat trick. This marks Hughes' third hat trick of 2018, a BC NCAA-era record.
The Tornados' final score came by way of a penalty kick. Shina was fouled deep inside the box, setting up a chance for her to earn her 14th goal of 2018. Shina capitalized, giving BC a 5-0 advantage that it wouldn't relinquish.
Hughes wraps up her 2018 regular season at the top of many statistical records at Brevard. Her 19 goals in 2018 are a BC NCAA-era school record for single-season goals, passing teammate Shina's mark of 11 goals in 2017. Hughes finished 2018 with 41 points, also a BC NCAA-era single-season record.
Both Hughes and Shina, pending postseason play, finish tied atop the BC record books for NCAA-era career goals scored. Both BC seniors have scored 25 goals apiece in their illustrious BC careers.
Shina and Hughes finish one and two respectively atop the BC NCAA-era career points leaderboard. Shina has recorded 56 career points, while Hughes holds 55 points. Shina and Hughes both passed former BC forward Bailey Varley (2008-11) in this category.
David sits alone atop both the single-season and career BC NCAA-era assist totals. David finished the 2018 regular season with 13 assists, which gives her both records by a landslide. David's 38 career points place her fourth all-time in BC NCAA-era history, trailing Shina, Hughes, and Varley (2008-11).
Coach Mascaro's 2018 edition of BC Women's Soccer finished the regular season with 11 wins, matching a program-best set last season. Brevard's 11-7 record is second best in BC NCAA-era history, trailing only the 2017 Tornados who finished 11-6-1.
BC Women's Soccer turns its attention to the ECAC postseason. The ECAC will announce its 16-team postseason field on Monday, Nov. 5.
