Women’s Soccer Drops Extra Time Heartbreaker to Bob Jones

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Despite battling to extra time in a scoreless tie, the Brevard College Tornados Women's Soccer team (7-5-0) fell to Bob Jones University (6-4-2) by a final score of 1-0 in extra time late Tuesday night.

The first half was a possession battle between the two non-conference opponents, as both squads traded possession frequently throughout the first stanza. Head Coach Juan Mascaro's team took a 0-0 tie into the intermission.

After the break, the Tornados came out aggressively on the attack. Through the first ten minutes of the second half, Brevard let six shots fly, but to no avail. Senior Ashley Hughes rang a shot off the crossbar, one of the Tornados' better looks of the match.

Bob Jones was paced by a fantastic performance from freshman goalkeeper Angelina Martin. Martin saved 14 shots on the night, completely shutting down the BC attack. Martin's performance proved to be the difference in this one, especially her effort early in the second half. Martin turned away three critical shots in the first ten minutes of second half action.

In the 82nd minute, Alyssa Heatherington had a great look off of a stolen pass, however, Heatherington's shot was punched over the crossbar by Martin.

In total, Brevard outshot Bob Jones 18-3 in the second half alone (12-1 shots-on-goal). BC was unable to take advantage of their looks throughout the match, as BJU rode the performance of Martin to victory.

In the first extra time period, a costly foul committed by Brevard set Bob Jones up with the position to create a look at the goal. BJU's Abby Davis drove home the game-winning golden goal in the 99th minute past the outstretched arms of Hannah Weatherall to give the Bruins a 1-0 victory.

Hannah Weatherall (3-2-0) recorded five saves in the contest for BC. The Tornados outshot the Bruins (24-9) in the match. Ashley Hughes led the Tornados attack with seven shots, while Megan Shina added six along with Caroline David's five attempts.

The Tornados return to USA South conference play at Ives-Lemel Field this weekend. BC takes on LaGrange on Friday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. before squaring off with Huntingdon on Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m.
