BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Women's Soccer team (5-2-0) looks to extend its three-game winning streak this weekend. The Tornados hit the road to face off with two USA South Conference foes, as they travel to Decatur, Ga. to square off with Agnes Scott (3-4-1) on Saturday, September 29 at 2 p.m. From there, Head Coach Juan Mascaro's squad will head down Interstate 75 to Macon, Ga. for a matchup with Wesleyan (Ga.) (1-7-1) on Sunday, September 30 at 1 p.m.
BC is coming off of a very successful stretch last week. The Brevard College Tornados Women's Soccer team defeated Salem College by a 2-1 margin in front of an outstanding homecoming weekend that saw the Tornados defeat Berea College 7-0 and Averett University 2-0. BC's 7-0 victory on homecoming Saturday over Berea was the program's largest margin of victory over another NCAA institution since joining the NCAA level of competition for Women's Soccer in 2008-09.
Last week was a week for individual accolades as well for BC. Senior Ashley Hughes was named USA South Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week on September 24 for her overall performance last week. Hughes racked up five goals, including a second-half hat-trick against Berea, along with two assists to total 12 points on the week. This effort catapulted Hughes to the top of the USA South Conference 2018-19 leaderboard for goals scored (nine) and total points (20).
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Weatherall also earned recognition from the USA South Conference. Weatherall was named USA South Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week following her performances last week. Weatherall (2-0-0) made two starts against Salem and Berea, only giving up one goal in her 180 minutes of action. Weatherall tallied ten saves in her two starts, including a shutout against Berea.
Heading into this weekend's action, the Tornados are among the USA South league leaders in statistical categories. Brevard ranks third in total goals (17), second in assists (15), second in total points (45), and are tied for second in goals against (7).
Throughout the 2018 campaign, the Tornados have relied on their dynamic trio of seniors Hughes, Megan Shina, and Caroline David to lead the BC offensive attack. Hughes has racked up nine goals and two assists for a total of 20 points. Shina was BC's leading scorer a season ago and has picked up right where she left off. She has totaled six goals alongside two assists for a total of 14 points. David's work distributing the ball has placed both BC's offense and herself amongst USA South Conference leaders, as David is currently tied for first in total assists with seven. These distributions, along with two goals scored against Berea, bring her point total to 11.
Coach Mascaro's versatile duo of goalkeepers Weatherall and Rebeccah Rojas, along with a stout back line of defense led by Senior Lane Berchtold, has been a key factor in why BC has only given up seven goals in 2018-19.
