Atlanta, Ga. – The Brevard Women's Soccer team traveled to northern Atlanta on Sunday afternoon to face off in non-conference action with the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. The Tornados fell by a score of 2-1, as Oglethorpe rallied late with two 2nd half goals.
Brevard picked off where they left off in their season-opening win at Emory & Henry, where a late goal sealed a Tornado victory. Senior forward Megan Shina scored in the 15th minute unassisted, making both goals the Tornados have scored on the young season of the unassisted variety.
The first half was sound both offensively and defensively for Brevard, who outshot (6-2), controlled more corners (2-0), pushed more shots on goal (5-2), and forced Oglethorpe into five first-half fouls.
However, the script was flipped in the second half. Oglethorpe pushed the envelope against the Tornados, forcing six shots on goal, two of which found the back of the net.
Turning Point: Brevard Tornados starting goalkeeper Rebeccah Rojas received a yellow card on a critical foul in the box, which Oglethorpe midfielder Maddie Cornell promptly converted as the equalizer. Grace Henderson's 81st-minute goal was the difference maker, rebounding Jalisa Kassam's blocked shot and finding the back of the net.
Next up: Brevard moves to 1-1-0 on the young season. The Tornados have a quick turnaround, as they head to Guilford College to take on the Quakers in a non-conference tilt this Tuesday.
