BREVARD, N.C. - Senior student-athletes Hunter Denney, Jezika Gunter, and Kaylee McRae were honored before the Brevard College Tornados Women's Lacrosse team (6-9, 3-7 USAS) took on the William Peace Pacers (9-5, 7-5 USAS) in Brevard's final home contest of 2019 on Thursday evening at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

The Pacers used a big first half to pull away from the Tornados, 17-6, for the USA South victory.

Micaiah Vacchiano, Brevard's leading scorer in 2019, added four goals to her season total on Thursday evening. Hannah Scharf, along with Denney, added a goal each for BC.

William Peace's Dana Florian and Allison Schaper each led the Pacers with six goals apiece, while Rylie Toomey added four goals and three assists. Schaper tacked on four assists for a 10-point performance to lead all players.

All told, the Pacers outshot the Tornados by a 30-15 margin on the evening. William Peace controlled 17 draw controls compared to Brevard's seven. The Tornados were successful on three of their seven free position attempts.

BC opened the matchup with a Vacchiano goal just a little over three minutes into action that gave the Tornados a 1-0 advantage. WPU answered back with three-straight goals to push up to a 3-1 margin.

Brevard's senior Denney got a goal back for the Tornados with 19:29 left in the first half, cutting the Pacers' lead, 3-2.

WPU put together its second three-goal stretch of the evening to extend the lead out to a 6-2 cushion. Scharf, a freshman from Southport, N.C., recorded her 21st goal of the season with 11 minutes left in the first half to cut WPU's margin to 6-3.

Over the last five minutes of the first half, William Peace racked up five-straight goals to push its advantage out to a commanding 11-3 gap.

WPU opened the second stanza up with back-to-back goals before Brevard's Vacchiano halted the Tornados' scoring drought with a free position goal.

Vacchiano added two more goals in the second half as the Tornados fell in their home-finale, 17-6.

The Tornados will close out their 2019 regular season tomorrow in Danville, Virginia when they take on USA South Conference foe Averett University. In an effort to beat impending inclement weather, tomorrow's contest has been moved up to a 12 p.m. start time.
