Tornados Look to Finish Out Season Strong

BREVARD, N.C. – A 13-12 victory over Piedmont on Wednesday evening gives the Brevard women's lacrosse team the opportunity to finish out the 2018 with a .500 mark when the Tornados host Huntingdon on Saturday at 1 p.m. and follow with a trip to Ferrum on Sunday, also set for a 1 p.m. start.

Two victories would move Brevard to 7-7 overall and mark the first .500 mark since the 2016 campaign when the Tornados finished 9-7.

A free position goal by Nina Siu with 8:01 remaining in the second half, coupled with sound defense, proved to be the difference as the Tornados earned a one-goal victory over visiting Piedmont at Ives-Lemel Field on Wednesday evening.

Knotted 12-all, Siu capitalized on a foul by the Lions' Kaitlyn Morris as she tallied the decisive goal on a free position shot. The Tornado defense rose to the occasion for the remainder of the game to move to 5-7 on the season.

The two teams battled throughout the day with neither team able to hold more than a two-goal lead at any point throughout the game. Siu finished with a game-high six goals, while Victoria Hayes added three and Hunter Denney contributed two for the Tornados.

Earning the victory for the Tornados in net was Shelby Arsenault, who made six saves. Kearnan, who finished with five groundballs, and Penina Fungalei (four groundballs) also made their defensive presence felt for Brevard.

Huntingdon (2-11) travels to Brevard on Saturday for the Tornados' Senior Day festivities after snapping an eight-game losing streak with a 17-11 victory over N.C. Wesleyan. The Hawks are led offensively by Shelby Martin (15 goals), Kaylee Andrews (seven) and Sam Blount (seven).

Ferrum (6-4), who has won four straight, marks the final game of season for Brevard on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers have two players with 30 goals, Kaitlyn Harley (39) and Audrey Ramsey (30), and five total with double figure goals. Teammate Brittany Hall leads the way in goal, making 118 saves.
