Strong Second Half Leads Falcons Past Brevard

MEISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer broke a four-all tie at the intermission with 10 goals in the second half as the Falcons downed Brevard by a 14-7 margin in women's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon.

Nina Siu led all Brevard scorers with four goals while Macaiah Vacchiano added two and Kelly Kearnan one in the contest. Josie Lent counted with five for the Falcons with teammates Meagan Bourque and Molly O'Friel contributing four each.

Despite the loss, goaltender Shelby Arsenault finished with 10 saves for the Tornados, who slipped to 1-5 on the season.

A pass from Lent to Bourque at the 22:18 mark resulted in the first goal of the contest. Brevard answered with a goal of its own, when Siu found an opened Kearnen, knotting the game at one-all at the 16:17 mark.

The Tornados took their first lead, 2-1, 23 seconds later when Siu converted a free position shot. Pfeiffer eventually knotted the game a 2-2 on strike by Lent, but the lead was brief as Siu added her second free position goal of the contest.

The back-and-forth battle for the lead continued with the Falcons adding goals by Lent and Kyle Lode, moving in front 4-3 with 10:37 remaining. Vacchiano scored the final goal of the half, knotting the game at 4-4, on a pass from Siu.

The tandem of Vacchiano and Siu teamed up again early in the second to give Brevard a 5-4 advantage just 2:01 into the frame. Lent responded with a goal for Pfeiffer, driving home a pass from Bourque to bring the contest to its fifth deadlock, 5-5. With 21:58 remaining Borque broke the tie when she scored on a pass from O'Friel.

Siu again stepped up in the clutch for the Tornados as she converted a free position shot for the sixth Brevard goal of the contest. Pfeiffer scored the next five unanswered, three off the stick of O'Friel and two from Bourque, as it moved in front 11-6.

Siu broke the scoreless streak for the Tornados on an unassisted goal with 4:04 remaining, trimming the lead to four, but Pfeiffer tacked on two goals by Lent and one from O'Friel to complete the seven-point win.

The Tornados begin a four-game homestand on March 7 when they host Felician at 1 p.m. on Ives-Lemel Field.
