WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— Eclipsing the 20-goal mark for the fourth time in program history, the Brevard women's lacrosse team established the new program record for single game goals and first victory by shutout as it downed Salem 26-0 on Wednesday afternoon. 

The 26-goal outburst tops the previous record (25) which was set on April 12, 2016 against Montreat. Brevard's first 20-goal outing came against Lincoln Memorial (April 4, 2015) and was quickly followed by a 20-10 win against North Greenville (April 21, 2015).

Victoria Hayes, Nina Siu and Macaiah Vacchiano led the way for the Brevard (1-4) offensive attack by scoring four goals each. In total there were eight multi-goal scorers for the Tornados, including Kelly Kearnan (three), Hunter Denney (two), Jezika Gunter (two), Kaylee McRae (two) and Kelly Wilkins (two). Kearnan enjoyed a solid all-around performance, scoring seven points as she notched a team-high four assists.

Goalkeepers Shelby Arsenault and Hannah Garrett faced five shots on goal from the Spirits (0-5) over the course of the contest. Arsenault made three saves and Garrett finished with two.

Brevard scored 14 goals in the first half, grabbing an early 2-0 lead on a pair of unassisted goals by Nina Siu in the first 3:30 of the game. Vacchiano added to the lead on a goal from a free position shot and Hayes tallied her first goal of the game at the 21:40 mark as the Tornados moved in front 4-0.

Kearnan notched the next two Brevard goals on free position shots as Brevard extended its lead to 6-0. Denney came through with her first goal of the afternoon and Siu reached the back of the net on a free position shot as the Tornados assumed an 8-0 lead.

Hayes drove home a pass from Kearnen for the ninth goal and Vacchiano netted back-to-back goals as the Brevard lead reached double figures, 11-0. Penina Fungalei and McRae tallied their first goal of the season during a three minute stretch, while Gunter drove a shot to the back of net to account for the final three goals of the half.

Brevard's first goal of the second half came just over four minutes as Hayes provided the 15-0 lead. Siu and Wilkins followed with strikes over the next five minutes as the margin stood at 17. Arsenault, playing the field, drove home a pass from Kearnen and Denney notched her final goal of the afternoon to make for a 19-0 advantage.

Kearnen put the 20th goal on the board for Brevard at the 13:12 mark which was followed by a strike from Gunter just over two minutes later. McRae found of the back of the net for a second time at the 8:50 mark, extending the lead to 22-0. Wilkins picked up her second point of the day on an unassisted goal and Nicole O'Connor scored her first collegiate goal with three minutes remaining.

Vacchiano tied the program mark for most goals in a game, 25, with an unassisted goal at the 1:48 mark. Hayes tallied the record-setting mark on Wilkins lone assist of the game with 54 seconds remaining.

Brevard returns to the field at Pfeiffer on March 3 and the two teams will square off at 1 p.m.
