BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard women's golf program begins its 2017 slate this weekend when it heads to Spartanburg, S.C. to compete in the Converse Invitational on Sept. 17-19.
The three-day tournament takes place at the Carolina Country Club, a par-72 course. The teams will be competing from both the white and blue tees in order to meet the requirement for a 5,800-yard event. Brevard is one of nine teams competing in the event along with Coker, Chowan Belmont Abbey, Pfeiffer and UVA-Wise.
The Tornados, who are under the direction of new head coach Bob Winch, will feature a lineup of Kelsie Rhyne, Taylor Scovel, Courtney Sharp, Rachel Byrd and Sierra Jones.
Rhyne, the lone senior on the 2017-18 squad, will look to mirror her fall campaign from a season ago that resulted in three top 30 finishes. The best performance by the Taylorsville native was an 18th place showing at the Etowah Valley Intercollegiate, where she fired a 170 (+26) at the two-day event.
Scovel, a sophomore from Charlotte, was also a solid performer in the 2016 fall season. She opened with a two-day score of 177 at the Etowah Valley Intercollegiate, finishing 26th at the event. After placing 35th at the Tusculum Fall Classic, by virtue of shooting a 173, Scovel wrapped up the fall with a 173 (+29) as she finished 17th at the St. Andrew's Fall Invitational.
Sharp brings experience to the lineup as well, making a pair of top 20 finishes during the 2016 fall schedule. The Jacksboro, Tenn., native carded a 169 (+25) at the Etowah Valley Intercollegiate as she finished 17th at the event. One week later, on Sept. 26, 2016, Sharp posted a 167 (+23) at the Tusculum Fall Classic. Her fall season concluded with a ninth place showing at the St. Andrew's Fall Invitational after a two-day score of 164 (+20).
Both Byrd and Jones are making their collegiate debuts this weekend.
