MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team (2-3) dropped a 60-50 non-conference road matchup at Pfeiffer University (2-4) on Saturday afternoon in Misenheimer, North Carolina.
Deja Riddick led the Tornados with a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Riddick also recorded game-highs with five assists and three steals.
BC's Avery Lockwood came off the bench to add nine points, while Shakirah Thompson registered eight points after shooting 3-of-7 from the field including two made 3-pointers.
Pfeiffer has three players score in double figures led by 25 points from A'Mya McClain. Kortni Pinion scored 15 points, while Brina Bentley added 11 points for the Falcons.
The game began as a low-scoring, defensive struggle. Brevard went scoreless for the first 4:41 of the contest until a layup by Riddick. Pfeiffer struggled offensively as well, shooting 1-of-13 from the field for the opening quarter. The Falcons were able to earn trips to the free throw line going 6-of-8 from the charity stripe en route to an 8-6 lead after one period.
The two offenses picked up some momentum in the second quarter as Pfeiffer outscored BC 16-13 to take a 24-19 lead into intermission.
BC played its best period in the third quarter, twice cutting the deficit to four points. With 3:12 remaining, Lockwood hit a layup off a Riddick assist to make the score 34-30. Three minutes later at the end of the quarter, Riddick hit two free throws to cut the score to 42-38 after three periods.
With 6:55 to play in the fourth quarter, a made 3-pointer by Thompson cut the deficit to 46-45. However, the Falcons would finish the game on a 15-4 run en route to the 60-50 victory.
For the game, the two teams shot similarly front the field with the Tornados shooting 28.8% and the Falcons shooting 27.6%. The free-throw line proved to be the major difference int the contest. Pfeiffer shot 24-of-32 from the line (75%), while Brevard shot 9-of-23 (39%) from the stripe.
Brevard returns home for the team's USA South Conference opener set for Saturday, November 30 vs. LaGrange. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
