MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Brevard College Tornados Women's Basketball team (7-8, 3-6 USAS) dropped the first of back-to-back USA South road contests on Saturday afternoon to the Maryville Scots (7-9, 5-2 USAS) by a final score of 64-45.
Brevard had two student-athletes reach double-digit scoring figures, as junior guard Ty'She Washington led the way with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Freshman center Avery Lockwood tallied 10 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Lockwood grabbed five rebounds to round out her effort. Junior center Krysta Davis led all Tornados with eight rebounds off the bench.
Maryville was propelled by four double-digit scorers. Klaire Varney led the way with a near double-double effort, tallying 16 points while grabbing nine boards.
The Tornados were plagued by poor outside shooting, posting a 4-of-25 (16%) mark from deep compared to Maryville's 9-of-22 (40.9%) clip. Brevard's shooting was below its usual mark in general, as the Tornados hit only 29.3% from the field and shot 7-of-17 (41-2%) from the free throw line.
Maryville led wire-to-wire in this contest, with its largest lead being the final 19-point spread.
Despite an early 12-4 lead by Maryville in the first quarter, the Tornados kept things tight. Brevard used its own 9-3 stretch to pull within two points at 15-13, as the Scots would hold a 21-16 advantage after the first quarter.
Maryville would hit some key 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a 37-25 lead into the half. The Scots held Brevard without a 3-pointer in the second quarter, as the Tornados only mustered 4-of-14 shooting from the field during this stanza.
Brevard used a spirited 11-0 scoring run led by Lockwood and Destiny Williams in the third quarter to pull within just three points at 39-36 with 4:33 left in the third period. However, the Scots would once again catch fire from long range to push their lead back up to double-digits at 50-40 heading into the fourth quarter.
Maryville would pull away in the final period, ending the contest on a 7-0 run to take a 64-45 victory. The Scots' defense held Brevard to just 2-of-12 shooting in the final period, denying the Tornados at a comeback attempt.
Brevard returns to action tomorrow as they head to Demorest, Ga. to face the USA South West Division-leading Piedmont College Lions (14-3, 8-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
