Tornados Prepare for Road Rematches Against Maryville, USA South West-Leading Piedmont

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Women's Basketball team (7-7, 3-5 USAS) embarks on its biggest road trip of the season as the Tornados rematch with the Maryville College Scots (6-9, 4-2 USAS) on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Maryville, Tenn. before heading to Demorest, Ga. for a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee against the USA South West Division-leading Piedmont College Lions (13-3, 7-0 USAS).

The Tornados hosted both Maryville and Piedmont in December of 2018 in tightly contested affairs. Brevard played Maryville down to the wire at the Bosh on December 5, 2018, with the Scots prevailing 71-68 in the final seconds. The Tornados and Lions met on December 15, with the Lions taking a 69-55 decision in a game that saw 10 lead changes.

Brevard is coming off a busy four-game week in which the Tornados went 1-3 with three narrow defeats, including two one-point losses.

Ball control will be a key to Brevard's success this weekend. The Tornados currently average the least amount of turnovers-per-game (14.1), so they will look for that trend to continue against USA South stalwarts Maryville and Piedmont.

Freshman center Avery Lockwood will look to control the boards this weekend for Brevard. The Foxworth, Miss. native is currently averaging 8.5 rebounds-per-game, which is tied for sixth overall in the USA South. Extrapolating these averages, Lockwood holds 16.3 rebounds per 40 minutes, which is third in the league.

Sophomore Deja Riddick is coming off of a breakout week for the Tornados. The Norfolk, Va. native tallied a career-high 18 points against Berea on an impressive 8-of-13 shooting before supplanting that mark with a new career-high 21-point outing at Wesleyan, shooting a remarkable 9-of-11 from the floor.

After Brevard's back-to-back game road trip this weekend, the Tornados return home on Saturday, January 19 for a conference rematch against LaGrange College (8-6, 3-3 USAS), which is part of doubleheader action at the Boshamer Gymnasium. Brevard's men's team will face LaGrange at 2 p.m., with the women following soon after at 4 p.m. the BC Tornados Women's Basketball team faced LaGrange on January 4, falling 56-55 in overtime.
