BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard women's basketball team puts its three-game winning streak on the line Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Wesleyan at Boshamer Gym.
Saturday's women's basketball game will also serve as a way for members of the Brevard community to honor Chuck Dunbar, who passed away in June after battling cancer. Dunbar, an avid supporter of Brevard athletics and voice of the Tornados, served as the Operations Director of Zaxby's restaurants in North Carolina and Virginia.
The Tornados (7-5) began the win streak with a 57-43 victory over Agnes Scott on Jan. 6, before adding triumphs over Huntingdon (58-46) and most recently William Peace (95-62). In Wednesday's 33-point win over the Pacers, Brevard season-highs in points (95), field goals (38), 3-pointers (13), shooting percentage (52.1%), 3-point shooting percentage (56.5%) and assists (23).
Individually, Brevard is led by Annalee Bollinger (14.2 ppg) and Ty'She Washington (10.1), while senior Whitney DeMoss has anchored the post with 84 rebounds (57 defensive). Bollinger has knocked down the most field goals (51), free throws (40) and 3-point field goals (28), while Washington is hitting 42-of-96 from the field.
Washington is averaging 11.3 points per contest in the winning streak, knocking down 14-of-21 (66.7%) from the field, while Bollinger has handed out 13 assists and is 5-of-14 from beyond the arc. Deja Riddick has also made her presence felt with 27 points, converting 11-of-15 (73.3%) field goals. DeMoss leads five Tornados in double figure rebounds with 35, followed by Riddick and Destiny Williams, who have 16 each.
Wesleyan enters the game on a two-game losing streak, through its first nine contests, after suffering setbacks to Maryville (72-43) and Agnes Scott (51-45). The Wolves' offense is led by the combination of TK Blount (136 points) and Taylor Thigpen (111), averaging 50.9 points per game as a unit.
Blount has converted 59-of-145 (40.7%) of her field goal attempts, knocking down eight from beyond the arc, while climbing the glass for 56 rebounds (36 defensive). Thigpen provides the offensive punch from 3-point range, hitting a team-high 12 treys, to go along with 31 assists.
With Dunbar's assistance, Zaxby's and Brevard athletics cemented a lasting bond that has extended throughout the years. Recognized throughout Brevard for his service to the community, Dunbar enjoyed assisting out any school he could through the company.
Dunbar's passion for the sport of basketball was so extensive that he traveled to the Tornados' clash with Auburn in 2015. He also placed a basketball goal behind the Brevard Zaxby's to demonstrate his love of the game, challenging his employees to pick-up games. His family will be in attendance at the game and recognized at halftime, along with one of Chuck's favorite halftime game's "Chuck the Chicken."
