BREVARD, N.C.- Brevard controlled the boards and forced 17 turnovers to win a defensive battle over Huntingdon 58-46 in women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon in Boshamer Gymnasium.
Senior Whitney DeMoss led all players with 14 caroms in the game, as the Tornados were able to out-rebound the Hawks 48-36. DeMoss finished the game with six points, as she went 2-of-4 from the floor with two made free throws.
Freshman Ty'She Washington led all Brevard scorers with 12 points, knocking down 4-of-6 shots in the game, as well as grabbing five boards in the contest. Freshman Destiny Williams was also a vital part of the win, recording seven points, six rebounds and four steals.
For Huntingdon, Juliette Harp led all scorers in the game with 17 points, shooting 7-of-17 from the floor and led the Hawks with 11 rebounds. Harp remains one of only four players in the USA South Conference who averages a double-double on the season.
By halftime the game saw 10 lead changes and the score was tied six times. At the 9:26 mark in the third quarter, Mia Hudson knocked down a jumper to take their final lead of the game, as the Hawks led 26-25.
Following the shot from Hudson, the Tornados went on an 18-7 run to close out the quarter, as Brevard used a well-balanced offensive attack with six different players scoring at least one point. Washington led all Brevard scorers in the quarter with four points.
The fourth quarter began with six straight points from the Hawks to close the lead to four points, when a 30-second timeout was called by Brevard head coach Donald Hudson. Following the breather, the Tornados went on an 11-3 run, highlighted by two wide-open layups from Kelsie Rhyne and Whitney DeMoss.
The win marks the fourth time during the 2017-18 campaign where the team held their opponent under 50 points in a victory.
Today's game also marked the second time all season where every player to enter the game for Brevard scored at least one point for the Tornados (Dec. 31, 2017 at Western Carolina).
Going into halftime, Huntingdon held the advantage in field goals made, as the Hawks went 10-of-27 while the Tornados went 8-of-27. However, Brevard knocked down two 3-pointers in the first half compared to zero made 3-pointers from Huntingdon.
Washington led all Brevard scorers at the break with eight points, going 2-of-2 from the floor with one 3-pointer and 3-of-4 from the foul line.
Brevard's next game will be on January 10th, as the team will go on the road to take on William Peace at 6 p.m.
