Spartans’ Hot Shooting Downs Brevard

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Anda Kuzmina finished with a game-high 20 points and led five players in double figures as USC-Upstate earned a 109-39 victory over Brevard in women's basketball exhibition for the Tornados on Tuesday evening.

Kuzmina, who finished 8-for-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from the 3-point line in the contest, had a solid all-around performance for the Spartans with six rebounds and five assists. She was joined in scoring by the combination of A'Lexxus Davis (17 points), Tamera Thorpe (15), Riley Popplewell (12) and DeNisha Swain (10).

Thorpe, who finished 7-of-8 from the field, joined Kuzmina among the top Spartan shooters as the team capped off the game by hitting 38-of-55 (69.1%) from the floor. USC Upstate, which improved to 5-10 on the season, shot at least 55 percent from the floor in each quarter. The Spartans enjoyed their best outing in the fourth, where they hit 11-for-13 (84.6%), resulting in 32 points.

USC Upstate, which led wire-to-wire in the contest, took advantage of a 54-14 edge in points in the paint as well as a 46-13 advantage in bench scoring.

Brevard's offense was led by the duo of Annalee Bollinger and Destiny Williams, who emerged with 10 points each. Bollinger knocked down 4-of-14 from the floor, including two 3-pointers, while Williams finished 4-of-16 from the floor and pulled down two rebounds. Teammate Tameka Robinson led the way for the frontcourt with three rebounds.

The Tornado offense, which struggled throughout the afternoon, had its best outing in the opening frame when Brevard knocked down 6-of-14 (42.9%) field goals for 13 points.

Brevard returns to the court this weekend when it hosts Agnes Scott (Jan. 6) and Huntingdon (Jan. 7) for a series of afternoon contests.
