Bollinger, DeMoss Highlight Home Opener

BREVARD, N.C. – Rachel Hawn emerged with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead five Maryville players in double figures as the visiting Scots earned a 92-75 victory on Wednesday evening at Boshamer Gym.

Hawn, who competed a double-double effort with 10 rebounds (seven defensive), was joined in scoring by Madison Maples (20 points), Haley Talbott (14), Elsa Eckenrod (12) and Libby Gardner (10). Hawn reached double figure scoring by converting 10-of-19 from the field.

Maryville (1-4) picked up its first win of the season after hitting 27-of-57 (47.4%) from the floor and 29-of-33 (87.9%) from the free throw line, after drawing 28 fouls on Brevard. The Scots hit at least 40 percent of their field goals in each quarter, including a 7-of-13 (53.8%) outing in the final frame to complete the victory.

Brevard's Annalee Bollinger led all scorers with 27 points, knocking down 9-of-21 from the field and 8-of-15 from beyond the arc. Teammate Whitney DeMoss anchored the post with 10 points and 10 rebounds, capping off her third double-double effort of the season.

Jade Napier, who finished 6-of-13 from the floor, finished with 12 points and Kelsie Rhyne added 11 points after hitting 4-of-9 from the field to go along with a pair of free throws. The Tornados (1-3) were successful on 30-of-68 (44.1%) field goals and 10-of-24 (41.7%) 3-pointers.

Maryville maintained its double-digit advantage throughout the final quarter, extending the lead to 19 in the first 4:52 of the frame on a layup by Hawn. Eight points from Bollinger and four each by Ty'She Washington and Destiny Williams was not enough for Brevard to offset the Scots' offense that finished 7-of-13 from the floor and 12-of-13 at the charity stripe.

A 24-point third quarter allowed Maryville to distance itself on the scoreboard as the Scots assumed a 66-54 lead. Brevard made a strong push for the lead through the first four minutes of action, trimming the halftime deficit to two following layups by Napier and DeMoss.

Maryville answered with a trey by Maples and added a layup by Kelly Wandell to stretch the advantage to five, 56-51, at the 3:26 mark. The Scots would put together a 10-3 run to close out the frame, highlighted by four points from Maples and a 3-pointer by Talbott.

Bollinger enjoyed her second double-figure quarter of the game in the second, knocking down four 3-pointers en route to 12 points. However, the Scots took a 42-39 lead into the intermission by virtue of eight points from Eckenrod and six by Maples. Maryville's defense allowed just six made field goals by the Tornados, resulting in 14 rebounds (nine defensive). Meanwhile the Scots' offense finished 7-of-14 and the combination of Hudgens, Hawn and Wandell accounted for five offensive rebounds.

Brevard got off to a solid start in the first half, assuming a 22-18 lead behind 11 points from Bollinger. The junior guard knocked down four field goals, including three from long distance, to provide the four-point advantage. The Tornados were 9-of-21 from the floor, while Maryville was 6-of-13 (46.2%) and led by the trio of Hawn, Eckenrod and Amber Hudgens.

The Tornados return to action on Friday evening at Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m. They then travel to Covenant for a 2 p.m. contest the following afternoon.
