Brevard College Hosts a Successful Third-Annual Boulder Bash

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Climbing team hosted its third-annual Boulder Bash on Saturday at the Brevard Rock Gym, with 79 collegiate climbers representing nine colleges participating in the USA Climbing Appalachian Region competition.

The competition was held in a Redpoint format, giving climbers an unlimited amount of attempts over the event which lasted over four hours.

Eight members of the Brevard College Climbing team competed in the home event.

On the women's side, freshman Madison Altman led the Tornados with a sixth-place finish after accumulating 20,800 points. Altman completed problems #39, #40 and #42 in one attempt as well as problems #41 and #46 in two attempts as her five top climbs.

Also competing for Brevard College in the women's competition was sophomore Danielle Brown who finished 14th with a total of 15,400 points.

In total, 27 female climbers competed in the competition with Christine Turk of Lees-McRae winning the event with 22,400 points.

In the men's competition, Jake Roberts was the highest finishing Brevard College climber with a 16th place finish and a 20,300 point total. Nate Boepple (19th, 19,100 pts) and Mac Fitzgerald (20th, 18,900 pts) also placed in the top-20 for the Tornados.

Taylor Everard (25th, 18,700 pts), Carlton Angell (31st, 17,600 pts) and Sam Willis (47th, 13,500 pts) rounded out the scoring for the Brevard College Climbing team.

The men's field featured 54 total climbers as Joshua Gregory of Appalachian State won the competition with 26,800 points.

In addition to host Brevard College, institutions represented at the event included Appalachian State, Butler, Duke, Lees-McRae, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Western Carolina.

Next up for the Brevard College Climbing team is the USA Climbing Collegiate Appalachian Regional Championships to be held Saturday, March 30 in Nashville, Tenn.
