Rock climbing announces 2017-18 slate

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard climbing head coach Travis Gray released his team's schedule for the 2017-18 season, a slate that features five events including a match at home on Jan. 20.

The season begins on Saturday, Nov. 11, when the Tornados head to Boone to compete at Appalachian State. Less than a month later Brevard treks to Nashville, Tenn., taking part in the Climb Nashville event.

After returning for the spring semester, Brevard hosts its only event of the season on Jan. 20. Gray will take his team back on the road on Feb. 18 when the Tornados head to Cullowhee for the final regular season match of the campaign at Western Carolina.

Gray said he is excited to build on last year's success, which featured a regional championship.

"Winning our regional championship as our first year as a team, it's an opportunity to learn from that," says Gray.

The head coach also says the team has a solid foundation of returning climbers, as well as first-year competitors.

"We have nine returners coming back, and a few seniors, and we also have a few very strong recruits coming in," says Gray.

The Tornados will then have a month to prepare for the Appalachian Regional Championship, which is set to be held at The Crag in Nashville, Tenn.

The season concludes at the USA Climbing Collegiate National Championships, held April 20-22 in an undetermined site at this time.
