BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College's Tom Mittring, Tim Hengst and Tyler Frazee completed perfect records in 2019 USA South Conference singles competition as the Brevard College Men's Tennis team (6-12, 4-8 USAS) concluded its regular season with a 5-4 defeat to USA South Conference leaders Piedmont (14-5, 11-0 USAS) Tuesday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex. Mittring, Hengst, and Frazee combined for a perfect 33-0 record in USA South singles play this season
Mittring capped off his remarkable career at Brevard College with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in number one singles over Piedmont's Kanler Cumbass. With the win, the senior from Bavaria, Germany finished his career with 24-straight wins in singles play dating back to February of 2018. The 24-straight no.1 singles wins represents an NCAA-era program record.
Mittring, a three-time USA South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week recipient in 2019, was perfect this season in no. 1 singles matches going 14-0 overall and 9-0 in USA South Conference play.
Hengst, a senior from Menden, Germany, defeated Harrison LaBollita 6-1, 6-1 in number two singles to finish his year with 14 straight singles wins. The reigning USA South Conference Player of the Week, Hengst was a perfect 12-0 in USA South singles play this season with a 9-0 record in no. 2 singles and a 3-0 record in no. 1 singles. Including both conference and non-conference competition. Hengst concluded his career with 14 straight singles wins overall.
Mittring and Hengst teamed up for doubles play for a final time in their collegiate career, taking on Piedmont's team of Cumbass and Gray in number one doubles. The Tornado tandem won the match 8-3 to improve their overall doubles record to 11-2 and a 7-1 mark in conference play.
Frazee, a freshman from Tampa, Fla., battled to win a three-set victory over Jarrett Gray in number three singles in the final match to conclude Tuesday at the McCoy Tennis Complex. Frazee dropped the first set to Gray 6-3, then evened the match with a 7-5 win in set number two. With the entire rosters of both teams looking on, Frazee then won the decisive third set over Gray in a 10-4 tiebreaker to preserve his own undefeated streak in conference play.
The winner of four USA South Rookie Player of the Week honors, Frazee improved to 12-0 in USA South Conference play which included a 9-0 record in no. 3 singles and a 3-0 mark in no. 2 singles. Overall, Frazee went 15-3 in singles play including 14 straight singles wins to close out the season.
Piedmont secured the team win over the Tornados by winning no. 2 doubles, no. 3 doubles (via default) as well as no. 4, no. 5 and no. 6 singles (via default).
