Mittring and Hengst Win Singles and Doubles Matches on Senior Day

BREVARD, N.C. – Seniors Tom Mittring and Tim Hengst extended their respective singles and doubles win streaks as the Brevard College Tornado senior class was honored as part of the Senior Day festivities at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

BC Men's Tennis (6-9, 4-5 USAS) narrowly fell, 5-4, in a close USA South Conference match against the visiting Scots of Covenant College (7-7, 7-2 USAS). Brevard won numbers one-through-three singles alongside Mittring and Hengst's no. 1 doubles victory.

The duo of Mittring and Hengst paired up for a Senior Day victory over Covenant's Paxton Haggerty and Trey Wood, 8-3. The duo of BC seniors from Germany improved their doubles record together in 2019 to 10 wins and two losses, with a dominant 6-1 mark at the no. 1 doubles line in conference play. Mittring and Hengst have claimed six doubles victories in a row.  

The Tornados dropped their no. 2 doubles contest, 8-1, while the Scots picked up the decision in no. 3 doubles by default.

Mittring extended his NCAA-era program-record no. 1 singles win streak to 23 matches with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Covenant's Logan Hull. Mittring is now 13-0 in no. 1 singles matches in 2019, including an 8-0 record in conference no. 1 singles matches.

Hengst secured his 11th-straight singles victory in his no. 2 singles match against Haggerty. The Menden, Germany native cruised to a 6-1 first set victory before battling to a 7-6 second set win thanks to a 7-3 result in the set tiebreaker.

Three-time consecutive USA South Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week selection Tyler Frazee won his 11th singles match in a row by dropping Covenant's Ben Luke in a close match. Frazee took the first set, 7-6, via a tight 7-5 set tiebreaker before gliding to a match-clinching 6-1 second set.

Covenant took no. 4 and 5 singles in controlling fashion while winning no. 6 singles by default.

BC Men's Tennis hits the road next weekend for a pair of USA South matches before closing its season out at home. The Tornados first head to LaGrange, Ga. for a conference rematch against the LaGrange College Panthers (7-3, 6-2 USAS) on Friday, April 12 at 4 p.m. before squaring off against the Huntingdon College Hawks (5-7, 3-4 USAS) on Saturday, April 13 at 12 p.m. ET. Brevard is scheduled to close out its regular season at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Tuesday, April 16 at 3 p.m. against the Piedmont College Lions 11-5, 8-0 USAS).
