BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Men's Tennis team (2-6, 1-3 USAS) used a complete team effort to pick up its first USA South Conference victory of the season, defeating the visiting Maryville Scots (0-8, 0-5), 9-0, at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Tom Mittring extended his singles win streak to 16 matches by defeating Maryville's Austin Smith, 6-1, 6-0.
The Tornados swept doubles handily before cruising through a singles sweep that was capped off with Alex Glaze's second-career singles victory. Glaze fended off a hard-fought effort from Maryville's Caleb Underdown, saving three set points in the first set tiebreaker that finished in favor of Glaze, 13-11. Glaze took the first set, 7-6, before winning the decisive second set, 6-3.
Glaze also picked up his first-career doubles victory, paired in the no. 3 slot with Andrew Ingram to defeat the Scots' pairing of Andre Matamoros and Caleb Underdown, 8-3.
Mittring and Tim Hengst handled no. 1 doubles, 8-0, as did their counterparts in no. 2 doubles. Tyler Frazee, the reigning USA South Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week, paired up with Nathan Boepple to defeat Maryville's Beau Branton and Egan Spoltore, 8-0.
Hengst (no. 2) and Frazee (no. 3) didn't drop a single point in their singles matches en route to victories. Boepple (no. 4) and Ingram (no. 5) claimed singles wins 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively to round out BC's dominant showing at the McCoy Tennis Complex.
The Tornados are back in action this weekend for another USA South test against LaGrange College (4-2, 3-1 USAS) on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. at the McCoy Tennis Complex.
