BREVARD, N.C. - Junior student-athlete Nathan Boepple and freshman student-athletes Andrew Ingram and Alex Glaze picked up their first-career collegiate singles victories as the Brevard College Tornados Men's Tennis team (1-5) claimed its first win of the 2018-19 season by defeating Spartanburg Methodist College by a final score of 7-2 at the McCoy Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.
The Tornados as a team claimed a No. 1 doubles victory before taking all six singles matches for seven points total on the afternoon.
Leading things off, the dynamic veteran duo of Tom Mittring and Tim Hengst cruised to a No. 1 singles sweep over SMC's Oliver Blume Ellis and Joshua Low, 8-0.
BC's No. 2 pairing of Tyler Frazee and Nathan Boepple narrowly fell, 8-4, in their doubles pairing. SMC claimed a forfeit result in the No. 3 slot to round out the doubles action.
Brevard fired on all cylinders heading into singles action, pulling off a dominant sweep.
Mittring, Hengst, and Frazee all continued their impressive work in singles competition by gliding to victories over the Pioneers. With the No. 1 singles victory, Tom Mittring has now won 15 consecutive singles matches dating back to the 2017-18 campaign.
In the No. 4 slot, Boepple earned the first singles victory of his BC Men's Tennis career in thrilling fashion, claiming a three-set victory over SMC's Joseph Varner, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Ingram secured his first victory as a college athlete and a BC Tornado in three-set fashion, coming back from a 4-6 decision in the first set by taking sets two and three, 6-4, 6-4, for an exhilarating win.
Glaze also earned his first win as a college tennis player in come-from-behind fashion. After dropping the first set 6-7 (4-7), Glaze stormed back to defeat SMC's Noah Boykin by claiming a 6-3 decision in the second set followed by a 6-2 third set.
BC Men's Tennis joins its teammates on the Women's side for a USA South Conference test against Berea College (0-5) on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. in Berea, Ky.
