CENTRAL, S.C. - Senior Tom Mittring picked up his 12th consecutive singles victory as the Brevard College Tornados Men's Tennis team (0-2) dropped a close 4-3 NCAA DII scored decision to NCAA DII opponent Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
Mittring, who moves to 2-0 on the season in singles competition after a fall victory against Montreat, defeated SWU's Sarvesh Maria 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles action.
Fellow senior Tim Hengst battled through a hard-fought 5-7 first set against SWU's Peter Kovats before dropping a 0-6 second set.
On the doubles side, BC claimed a No. 2 doubles victory as the duo of David Bumgarner and Tyler Frazee defeated the Warriors' Joseph Olatunji and Ben Smith in convincing 6-4 fashion. The victory marked Bumgarner's first of the season, while Frazee remains unbeaten in doubles in 2018-19, dating back to the fall.
The veteran duo of Mittring and Hengst squared off against SWU's No. 1 pairing of Kovats and Nathan Holley in a pivotal matchup that Southern Wesleyan took 2-6.
BC claimed two walkover victories, as a short-handed Southern Wesleyan side carried five players into action on Saturday.
The Tornados return to action on Saturday, February 16 as they square off with Johnson C. Smith at 1 p.m.
