Covenant Halts Tornados' Two-Match Winning Streak

BREVARD-COVENANT RESULTS

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – An 8-1 setback to Covenant at the Baylor School Indoor Facility in Chattanooga, Tenn., halted the Brevard men's tennis program's two-match winning streak on Saturday afternoon.

Tom Mittring was responsible for the lone Tornado point of the afternoon, claiming a 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (10-4) victory over Matthew Harvie in the clash of No. 1 seeds. Harvie has been a standout throughout his career for the Scots, laying claim to four USA South Player of the Week awards and the 2016 USA South Player of the Year honors over the course of his four-year career.

Covenant grabbed the early lead in the match as Harvie and Chris Cox downed Mittring and Tim Hengst 8-6 in doubles play. That was followed by an 8-6 win from the duo of Logan Hull and Taylor Galloway, who defeated Will Christiansen and David Bumgarner. The Scots completed the sweep in doubles with an 8-1 victory by Trey Wood and Paxton Haggerty over the tandem of Jaume Reig and Florian Peyssonneaux.

The Scots extended their lead to 4-0 with Haggerty's 6-1, 6-0 victory against Bumgarner in the battle of fifth-seeded singles. Ben Tonkel earned the team victory for Covenant with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Peyssonneaux.

Galloway stretched the Scots' lead to 6-0 as he claimed a 6-0, 6-4 win over Reig, ahead of Mittring downing Harvie. Hull added a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Christiansen and Cox triumphed 6-2, 7-5 over Hengst to tally the final two points for the Scots.

The Brevard men's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 when it heads to Maryville.
