Tornado Top Three Seeds Garner Wins

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard men's tennis team got a lift from its top three individuals—Tom Mittring, Tim Hengst and Will Christiansen—who posted wins over Covenant on Saturday afternoon at the Asheville Racquet Club.

Hengst picked up the first Brevard point of the afternoon as he posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Covenant's Logan Hull in a showdown of No. 2 seeds. Hengst has now won three of his last four singles matches dating back to a win over Berea's Mike Malpartida on Feb. 27. Mittring downed Chris Cox in the clash of No. 1 seeds by scores of 7-6 (5), 6-4 to pick up his fifth victory in the spring slate.

Third seeded Will Christiansen handed Taylor Galloway a 6-4, 7-6 loss to provide the Tornados with their third point.

Covenant began the afternoon by earning an 8-0 victory from the duo of Wood and Haggerty, who downed Florian Peyssonneaux and Jaume Reig. Matthew Harvie and partner Chris Cox picked up the second point for the Scots when they earned an 8-3 win against Mittring and Hengst.

The Scots completed their sweep of doubles play when Hull and Galloway turned back the tandem of Christiansen and David Bumgarner 8-5.

Wood posted his second win of the day when he posted a 6-0, 6-1 win versus Peyssonneaux in singles action. Haggerty followed suit with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Reig to secure the match for Covenant. The Scots picked up their final point of the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win by Ben Tonkel over Bumgarner. 

The Tornados return to action on Tuesday, March 13, when they host Maryville at 2:30 p.m.
