Hawks Escape With Win Over Brevard

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Four victories in singles action helped Huntingdon earn a 5-4 victory over Brevard in men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala.

Huntingdon grabbed its only win in doubles action as the duo of Adam Self and Ben Marler downed Florian Peyssonneaux and Jaume Reig by an 8-1 margin. The Tornados rebounded and knotted the team score at one-all with an 8-6 triumph by Tom Mittring and Tim Hengst over John Jones and Bailey Burns. Will Christiansen and David Bumgarner wrapped up doubles play with an 8-6 victory over Ethan Fuller and Mark Melchor, giving the Tornados a 2-1 edge.

Hengst earned his second win of the afternoon as he opened singles play with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 wins over Burns. Mittring followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jones as Brevard owned a 4-1 lead with four matches remaining.

Huntingdon sliced the lead in half with a 6-0, 6-1 win by Melchor in a battle of fourth seeds with Reig. Marler picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bumgarner while his teammate Fuller closed out a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Peyssonneaux in a battle of six seeds.

The clash of No. 3 seeds Self and Christiansen decided the fate of the match. Self took the first set 7-5, but the gritty Christiansen rebounded to take the second set 6-3. Self regained his composure in the third and secured the team victory with a 6-0 win.

The Tornados return to action on Sunday afternoon when they trek to LaGrange for a 12 p.m. match with the Panthers.
