Crusaders Earn Wins Over Brevard

The team of Tom Mittring and Tim Hengst posted a victory for the Brevard men's tennis team, downing the combination of Zachary Blythe and Henrique Leal, but it was the Crusaders that came away with the 8-1 win in the match.

While Mittring and Hengst got the better of Blythe and Leal, Belmont Abbey retaliated with an 8-0 win by Andres and Daniel Astudillo. Mike Nguyen and Liam Curtin edged out Florian Peyssonneaux and Jaume Reig by an 8-6 final.

The Crusaders wrapped up singles play with six wins, including a 6-3, 6-2 victory from Blythe over Mittring in the battle of No. 1 seeds. Andres Astudillo grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hengst in No. 2 play.

Will Christiansen took the opening game of the No. 3 battle, but Chip Moore battled back to post a 5-7, 6-4 and 10-3 win in three sets. Belmont Abbey took all six points in singles action with wins from Thomas Rowzie (6-0, 6-0) and Adam Nesnow (6-2, 6-2) as they downed David Bumgarner and Peyssonneaux, respectively.

The Belmont Abbey women's team posted a 9-0 victory over the Tornados, grabbing an early lead in the match with doubles wins by the combination of Darian DeFrench / Erica Dorn, Blair Boatright / Alex Weber and Erika Noblett / Emily Heim. The tandem of Boatright and Weber received stiff competition from Brevard's Margaret Correll and Mekenzie Bowman, but emerged with the 8-3 victory.

DeFrench broke through in her clash with Kelsey Kushner in the clash of No. 1 singles, posting a 7-5, 6-3 win. Both Riley Ellingson and Morgan Nguyen came through with straight set wins for the Crusaders, downing Jen Cox and Correll as the No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

Bowman took one set from Dorn in the battle of four seeds, but Dorn grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 win. Boatright and Heim closed out the match with straight set wins over Carmen Boone and Hannah Spear, respectively.

The Tornados now turn their attention to Pfeiffer, who travels to Brevard for a match on Feb. 16.
